This article was very helpful. I've found the IR keyboard to be fine, though I agree the Bluetooth one sucks energy without any benefit. Of course, I don't think you can use the Bluetooth or the IR on a plane.
A few more tips:
Get PXA Clocker, a piece of freeware that'll let you slow your T3's chip down, which is fine for writing, and will greatly increase your battery life. The T3 is rated at 400 MHz, and I've found that at 150 MHz everything I need works fine, including the ability to listen to MP3s.
Pick up a USB charger, like the one that Apple makes for its Shuffle (but try the one from JavoEdge, or elsewhere -- you'll save half if not two thirds the cost of the Apple one).
