I could not understand how to drill a 6" hole (nearly the perfect size) nor tell which side of a vhs tape case is the "top".

i'm having a hard time figuring out where to put the hole as well...

I believe that was a typo which should read "6mm hole." It goes in the top of the case such that a line from the center of the hole to the center of the LED is parallel to the sides and covers of the case. When lined up with the sun, it will cast a small circle of light on the LED.Posted by stevemon2 on January 30, 2007 at 08:52:33 Pacific Time

I've done this project. it didn't work at first but then i called up the author and he helped me. but you shouldn't use a VHS. use a project box. they sell 'em at radio shack too.Posted by nicolenicolenicole on December 10, 2006 at 19:50:01 Pacific Time

we did make the instrument and it worked swell. unfortunately it was not a completely clear day, as there was some haze and a few clouds.
