  I could not understand how to drill a 6" hole (nearly the perfect size) nor tell which side of a vhs tape case is the "top".

  I believe that was a typo which should read "6mm hole." It goes in the top of the case such that a line from the center of the hole to the center of the LED is parallel to the sides and covers of the case. When lined up with the sun, it will cast a small circle of light on the LED.

  I've done this project. it didn't work at first but then i called up the author and he helped me. but you shouldn't use a VHS. use a project box. they sell 'em at radio shack too.

  we did make the instrument and it worked swell. unfortunately it was not a completely clear day, as there was some haze and a few clouds.
