The article is technically incorrect about the allowable (legal) broadcast power allowed by the FCC. The article states that you can broadcast at .25 Watt. In reality, you are legaly limited to 250 microvolts per meter as measured at 3 meters. This translates to something like .08 Watt. In fact, both Hobytron and Ramsey (linked in the article) recently got in trouble with the FCC for selling fully assempled versions of this kit (the FCC can't stop anyone from selling a bunch of parts though; ie. a kit).
It's doubtful that the FCC would ever nab you for running this transmitter though. The Ramsey kits are pretty good for beginners (they are easy to put together but they have a dirty signal) but there are much better low-power FM transmitters out there if you're interested. Look especially at the kits from PCS Electronics who offer a PC based transmitter (PCI Card). NRG-kits has some good transmitter kits as well.Posted by cairn on May 22, 2006 at 13:43:49 Pacific Time
