I noticed that a few months back you stated you were almost done with the improved source code. I am curious as to whether it is available yet or not? Thanks a ton.Posted by Dan9186 on January 06, 2009 at 17:13:06 Pacific Time

ok, I need help here. In your article you wrote that it would have been about $200 to build this, but you had to purchase the R/C car. I can't seem to find a Goggle/Camera/Trans/Reciever. I looked at everywhere...maybe I am just blind, or I am not looking at the right spot. My 7 year son is a bit disappointed, we talked about it for days and now I don't think I can build this. Any help here?? Can anyone direct me to some locations to purchase these items? I live in Ontario Canada, so Canadian suppliers would be best, but not necesary. Email me at mario6628@yahoo.com if anyone can help.Posted by mostuff on August 02, 2008 at 16:30:42 Pacific Time

Hi John,
on May 28, you wrote here you plan to make the PIC source code of this project available but you want it more user friendly. Would you be able to offer the code you have right now?
It would help me a lot if I could learn what the chip does. C-Code prefered but assembler code is also wellcome.
Thank you for sharing your great ideas!Posted by bapf on July 17, 2008 at 08:50:39 Pacific Time

I am currently teaching a course in Scottsdale, Az. for the next couple of weeks, but I am almost finished with the more user friendly version of the code. However, if you want the base code that I started with goto Microchip.com and do a search for AN847. The first result will give you the application note and the source code. I did a few modifications to simplify it for a RC car.Posted by mouter on July 17, 2008 at 09:23:12 Pacific Time

You should be able to view it with any PDF reader. FOXIT is very good, and free.Posted by mouter on July 14, 2008 at 08:54:48 Pacific Time

I am interested in a couple boards. If anyone is ordering (or has ordered) let me know, and I can go in on it.

- Group Order for PCBs?
You must be logged in to reply.
If anyone else is interested, I think it would be cool if we could do a group order for a better price. We could each pitch in for a board. I was looking at the form for a quote from circuitexpress.com, and I don't know enough about the design to fill it out though. =(
Hey Mr. Mouton, what did you do with your extra boards? =PPosted by RedFoxDude on June 06, 2008 at 10:36:36 Pacific Time

I am also interested in a bulk order since I would like to do as many as 10 with students.
Let me know how we could collaborate.
Thanks

Unfortunately, I don't have any extra. I only ordered 4 board and I made 4 cars. But that sounds like a great idea. Also, if you call circuitexpress.com and talk to the customer service rep., they are more than happy to walk you through the order process. I have work with them several times and they have even given me a tour of their plant and lunch. Very nice people.Posted by mouter on June 06, 2008 at 14:22:41 Pacific Time
- Lower-cost alternatives?
You must be logged in to reply.
Hello,
The "Resources" section of the article (page 105) talk about "lower-cost build alternative" available at this address.
Are these available?
This project obviously offert plenty of options in build depending of how one want to be cheaper or better, so I'm curious to see what you would choose.
And of course, lower cost means a better WAF, so... ;)Posted by Holstein on June 06, 2008 at 08:30:19 Pacific Time

Yes, there are many low cost build alternative options out there. Now, like with all projects, low cost is a relative term and application dependent. Nevertheless, don't be afraid to experiment and do your research.Posted by mouter on June 06, 2008 at 08:41:11 Pacific Time
- why custom make your own motor control?
You must be logged in to reply.
What was the reason for creating your own motor controller?? It seems like it added a lot of expense and complexity. Couldn't you have used an off-the-shelf electronic speed control?Posted by brave_baker on June 05, 2008 at 14:47:44 Pacific Time
- why custom make your own motor control?

Yes, you can use off the self speed controllers, but that takes all the fun out of building it your self. I built this particular motor control circuit to demonstrate how easy it is to do it yourself. Plus, you can take the same circuit board and use it for other applications.Posted by mouter on June 05, 2008 at 15:15:31 Pacific Time

Hello there,
I'm looking at the same battery and charger you mention in the article.
Does the charger come with the correct plug for charging the battery? I'm not familiar with li-poly batteries, and I'm wondering what the second plug is, is it for a balancer or the charger? Also, what power source do you use for the charger?
I was looking at the 2-pin connectors, and they are different than what is pictured. I imagine that they just plug directly onto the headers?
Thanks!Posted by RedFoxDude on June 05, 2008 at 10:49:51 Pacific Time
- Some questions.
You must be logged in to reply.
No, you have to make an adapter that will connect the battery to the charger using the 2 pin connectors. The second plug is for a balancer ( not needed for this project). I used a variable power supply to supply the charger. I soldered the 2 pin connectors to the headers on the PCB.

Ok, thank you very much!
Oh, I meant the JST connectors. They just plug onto the headers? I guess I could just get the battery with the JST connector. =)

Would love to build this but have not idea about Gerber files, what to do with them or how to do it. Any good article to help me get started>Posted by New to this on June 03, 2008 at 14:44:11 Pacific Time
- Gerber files?
You must be logged in to reply.
Using the gerber files given with this project, you can go online to expresspcb.com, circuitexpress.com, or others like these and send them the gerber file. They will use this files to manufacture the schematic into a printed circuit board. Prices will vary, but it's not a bad deal. You will then solder the components onto the board to finish the circuit.Posted by mouter on June 03, 2008 at 14:52:22 Pacific Time

Neither amazon.com nor tigerdirect.com have VGA goggles. Google found me some wired ones, but they are like $250. Are wireless ones really going to be so much less?Posted by drysdam on May 22, 2008 at 10:52:21 Pacific Time

It looks like the exact VGA goggles I used aren't available anymore. However, there are better ones out there, that can be used with any DVD player, ipod, or TV. See; ebay, Vetronix, itvgoggles.com, and solidsignal.com. Prices seem to start at about $132.99 and go up with quality.Posted by mouter on May 27, 2008 at 08:59:06 Pacific Time

I took a look at the gaming glasses you found and I am not sure they will work. They don't say anything about supporting VGA. So, I don't think you will be able to view the video signal from the camera. However, check these out http://itvgoggles.com/shop/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=1
. They cost a little more, but they are a lot more versatile.Posted by mouter on May 30, 2008 at 08:35:11 Pacific Time

The camera in the project is wireless and comes with a receiver. That said, I do wish that this project had included either plans to build or place to buy a head mounted display. Anyone with ideas where to get or how to build this part of the project?Posted by mrcog on May 23, 2008 at 14:42:09 Pacific Time
