I really enjoy MAKE but the slant of the articles can be pretty annoying.
First, the D-17 was GIVEN to the Co-Op(Sometimes free stuff needs ome work, Suprise).
Second, that tractor has to be at least 42 years old(Figure regular use for at least twenty of those years, 50,000 hours, and all it needs is a clutch).
Third it was built in the era when you repaired EVERYTHING (Esp. you worked on a farm).
Fourth, a clutch and throw out bearing for a AC D-17 is less than $200, not $1000(Or maybe these "Makers" could not figure out how to split a tractor to put a clutch in and had to pay to have it done?)
I doubt that the OSE LifeTrac can withstand the abuse either the Allis or the Massey took all the years before the were finally donated. It lacks even the tires needed to run over wet terrrain. Be interesting to see how that hoe attachment, in the photo, holds up to some packed clay as well.Posted by elviejohombre on May 14, 2009 at 19:13:06 Pacific Time
