- Too Hot in the CFL idea ...

Hi Tom,
Thanks for writubg your interesting article published in the May 2009 Make magazine, entitled "Power down with DMAIC".
What caught my attention was the study on cfl light heat stressing the base electronics.
I have a number of these lights in my garage and have been replacing them fairly frequently. Based on your findings, I'm sure the premature life is due to excessive heat.
In the article "C" photo, your attempt to divert the heat away from the base is a cool idea but I'm sure you'll agree a tedious process to make the conversion.
I've come with two off-the-shelf solutions and would like to share them.
The first one, does pretty much what your solution accomplishes.
I personally rejected this idea because it held the bulb too close to the ceiling and involved too many parts to lower it. (see attached photo)
My second idea works well. Only one part! My goals is to divert the heat away from the base and thus extending the bulb's lifespan. At this point in time I do not have any long term data but I'll be monitoring them! (see attached photo)
Thanks,
Lee Gernes
