Did anyone who attempted this project find it necessary to weight the keel? It seems to me that it might sail better with some added weight to the bottom of the keel.Posted by toddmaia on February 28, 2012 at 16:25:11 Pacific Time

My son and I finally finished this boat project. We had a great time doing it. The rigging was a little challenging. Also the grommets were difficult to put in even with the Dritz tool. However it all came together in the end. We haven't sailed it, but we look forward to doing so soon. Here's a picture of our finished boat, .Posted by jcastor on December 22, 2009 at 20:29:39 Pacific Time

I began this enjoyable project this afternoon; here is what I learned. Unless you have access to a band saw or are very gifted with a hand saw, you may consider purchasing enough 2x4 to cut 2 or 3 hulls. (I messed up the first hull with my jigsaw.)
It is worth making a jig for marking the cuts and any pilot holes (or indents) in the dow (they are indexed at 90 deg.) This can be accomplished by drilling a 1/4" hole in a block from the scrap of the 2x4. Cut the block in half. Drill out one of the blocks to 9/32". One end will hold the dow tight, the other supports it. If you use aluminum dow instead of wood then file the dow lightly before drilling to the prevent the bit from wandering...Posted by charly_the_cat on December 06, 2009 at 20:00:54 Pacific Time
