Turning your mobile phone into a magnetic stripe reader

mag.jpgHere’s a great project with lots of uses from the deepquest blog“Exploring my new Siemens MC 60 mobile I discovered an interesting feature. It has the ability to record small pieces of sound with its integrated microphone and store them as WAV files, so that you can use them later as personalized ring tones, etc…The recording feature made me think that I might use the mobile as a magnetic stripe reader, just like I did with computers with soundcards. After some tests I had successful results, so here is the process in case you are interested in doing the same”. In our 01 issue we show how to make one for your PC as well.

This would be a great project if I could find a way to use bluetooth as I don’t have a microphone jack for my phone. Any ideas?

Deek, I’m thinking you might have a microphone jack. Does your cell phone have a way to connect a headset to it other than by bluetooth? If so, then my friend you have a microphone jack.

I would find the schematics (very easy to get online) on converting a regular phone handset in to use with a cell phone. When you see the wiring that should give you a very good idea of how sound (i.e. the mic) inputs in to the cell phone.

    Hack on from there.
