Modding the Xbox in 10 Minutes

Thumb-1 Xbox modification has come a long way in the past couple years. With the introduction of the TSOP mod, potential modders no longer had to shell out money for a modchip; rather just bridge two points on the Xbox motherboard. Now one doesn’t even have to open up his Xbox. Welcome to the world of soft modding. Using code exploits in certain games, a user is able to load a phony gamesave that will boot into a Linux based operating system and allow a user to mod his Xbox… in under ten minutes. Link.

    1) This is old news indeed, the savegame softmods are at least a couple years old.

    2) The *actually* easy way to softmod the XBox these days, that doesn’t involve tracking down an ancient version of a game or getting a USB memory card adaptor, is to simply swap the IDE cables on the XBox hard drive after it’s powered up:

Even though the softmod is an old idea, it is the best one to try. I didn’t want to pop the case on my Xbox since it was a Halo edition but I wanted the benefits of a moded Xbox. Also, that cable swap idea could be way harder if you kill something yanking on cables. Softmod is so quick and you don’t even have to spend a lot of money. Look over the Xbox linux project and make your own USB to XBOX cable using cables from around the house (USB extension and Xbox extension) and adapt an old thumb drive to work on the Xbox (you know you got one laying around you’re not using). Plug it in the PC, dump the saved game off and rent a copy of one of the games that works with the softmod. You only need it long enouogh to load the moded saved game. Then like the guy says, 10 minutes and you have an Xbox that is moded. It can do things like Xbox Media Center. Sucker streams from my PC to TV pefectly. Reboot Xbox, play games or whatever.
