I didn’t know Goodwill had eBay-like auctions, but they do. Make reader zw suggested that the “Cameras & Electronic Equip” section has a lot of good deals and interesting equipment. And it’s true, there are a ton of weird and cheap electronics, most of them under $50. I also saw a new 4G iPod for $150. I’m not sure how good the actual purchase and delivery is, it seems the member organizations of Goodwill Industries International are the only sellers. It might be worth checking out. Link.

Goodwill used to have an awsome used computer and electronics store located in Austin, TX. A Maker’s dream store, full of lots of hard to find stuff.
Since they started these auctions all the good stuff has left the stores.
They closed the used computer store, and moved it into a normal goodwill store, and make it as bland as a mall kiosk.
I frequent the new, “lite” version of the Austin Goodwill computer store. Although it is bland, it is far nicer than the computer section of any normal Goodwill I’ve been to elsewhere. Sometimes there are some really interesting items in the glass-case paper-based auctions.
Purchase and delivery are fine — several years ago (2000-1), I bought a breadwinner-limited from shopgoodwill.com for $400.
problem is that the prices aren’t a bargain anymore. way too many people know about it at this point in time — heck, even five years ago the prices were getting up there, but now they’re pretty much even with what one would expect from ebay.
Just a quick post to alert potential bidders/buyers for the Goodwill on-line auction, especially for the Middle Tennessee Goodwill ShopGoodWill on-line auction. These people are deceptive about certain items. I purchased a small piece of collectible pottery (a sugar dish), but upon receipt, I discovered that the handle had been completely broken off and subsequently repaired. The picture in the original posting shows the sugar conveniently turned so that the broken handle (or at least the part where it had been glued back) was turned AWAY from the camera. I complained and was refunded my money, but the same thing happened again AT THE SAME STORE soon after on a different item. They would not refund my money the second time and now refuse to allow me to bid. And I have spent thousands on their auctions.
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THESE GOODWILL AUCTIONS, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF THE MIDDLE TENNESSEE GOODWILL STORE.
