Hack this CMOS tiny camera module and win…

Sparkfun electronics has a pretty good Maker-style challenge – “This is a 640×480 pixel resolution CMOS camera used in the Samsung E700 cellular phone. While 0.3 mega pixels may not sound like a lot, this module is one of the smallest, lowest cost CMOS imaging modules currently available to the embedded market…We would like to announce a $200 prize to the first user capable of capturing an image on the new CMOS digital camera. This 640×480 camera is extremely small, low cost ($19.95), and based on proven cellular technology. Unfortunately we don’t have much technical info to go with it. Up for a challenge?” Link.

It may not seem like a useful resolution, but there has been more than a project where that is a perfect resultion for processing reasons (image processing/tracking and computer learning). Especially at $20 whereas I paid $60 for a greyscale CMOS camera.

The Camera DSP chip used in the SGH-E700 is a MtekVision MV317S.

I have the E700 service manual if anyone is interested…

Just for closure, http://www.sparkfun.com/cgi-bin/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2442 is the discussion forum thread that tells you the answers, as this was reverse engineered after a little more than 5 months.
