Dave writes – “Here’s a cool one. Use this unconventional technique to create hardwood shavings that work far better than paper in starting a fire. (I’ve tried it – it works great!) The shavings dry out quickly and burn hotter and longer than paper.”Link.

My favorite old campfire trick is to buy a dozen eggs in the cardboard container. Fill each egg-cup with any type of sawdust. Then pour melted candlewax into each cup. When dry, cut out cups. Light the cardboard material.

kind of a waste of hardwood if you live anywhere near a lumbermill, lumbersupply or even a home supply store that carries lumber and has a cutting service, just ask them for a bucket full of shavings

the only one that has ever told me no, was a lumbermill who used the shavings to make extruded fire logs

my last trip cost me about $4 for a 30 gallon barrel full (I supplied the barrel), good mix from the lumbersupply, mostly pine, oak and redwood, far as I can tell
I’m working on a compacter to basically make homemade presto-logs, with shavings and paper shreddings, great way to get rid of junkmail.
