XBOX Controller Controller

Tony has a great Xbox controller controller project! – “What is this? It’s a system that will allow basically anything that can talk udp to control an Xbox. Why would you want to do this? I have no idea. I have my reasons, maybe you have some too. How this works: The XBOX buttons are physically pressed by arms (stiff wire) attached to servos that are controlled by a Basic Stamp 2. The BS2 is controlled by a gumstix over a serial port. The gumstix talks udp and accepts commands. So if you want to control an xbox, you basically have to talk a simple udp protocol to the gumstix. “ [via] – Link.

This is a cool idea, but it’s a very “steampunk” way of doing it. It would be much better to send five volt electricity to the board on the controller, or better yet to emulate the controller in Windows and output the signals through USB (if that’s possible).

A system like this could be used to run a gold-farming operation in upcoming Xbox 360 MMORPGs.

This seems overly complex for the sake of being complex. Who needs Basic Stamps, Gumstix and all that mechanical stuff when you could just reverse engineer the Xbox controller protocol (it’s basically USB) or canabalize an actual controller.

why does he need to touch the buttons with servo’s? I’d have just opened up the controller and soldered directly to the board

This would make the ultimate high score machine. You’d be able to find the perfect line in a game etc. I bet he’s going to be using it in an xbox live game to thrash a highscore board. Personally I think this is a champion idea.

To those who wonder why it is as it is…
    …it is because it’s cool.

would it not just be easier to attach relays to the contacts for all of the buttons?
