I just wired an X-10 relay unit across each of my XBOXes. Just tied the relay in parallel with the XBOX power switch and set the relay to momentary trigger.

A bit pricey solution compared to the IR hack ($18 each box…plus extra x10 control stuff if you don’t have it already). And it’s admittedly not nearly as cool as an IR mod :) ,but it integrates nicely into my existing home automation setup.

I did something similar with a PIC, though not as feature full as the one on the linked site. Mine supports powerup using the xbox dvd remote and shutdown/reboot by holding a predefined button for 5 seconds. I was initially planning on selling them, but it just takes too long to make the buggers :) I have two of them installed and working, overall a pretty fun project to do.
