Condo-Q (DIY Smoker)

Smoker Disa
Weconway wasn’t allow to have a BBQ at his condo, so he made a DIY smoker – “The bottom pot is a 14″ terra cotta pot from Wal-Mart. The hot plate inside was an all-metal 1500W unit I bought on E-bay. The Char-Broil grill thermometer and 13.5″ smoker grate came from Home Depot. I got an el cheapo steel pie plate (holding the burnt hickory chips) from a local housewares place. The hardest part was finding the shallow pot for the top (I got it at Pike Nursery). The pie plate rests directly on the burner, with the grate going inside the bottom pot.”Link.

Alton Brown of Good Eats Fame did this one on a show several years ago. I’ve had the same setup for the last two years. It actually works quite well.

Are terra cotta pots made without any toxic crap in the clay?

You’ll be fine as long as you don’t get the glazed pots. I too have been using one of these for a while, and I love it!

I too have built one of these after watching good eats, but one thing that bugs me, but would require a masonary saw to resolve, is the loss of all that smokey goodness and heat when you need to change wood chunks.

So I’m thinking about adding a door on the side to have easy access to my tray. My dremel just won’t work, the pot is too thick, so I’m thinking of a cutting wheel and my side angle grinder.

could I do this using the side burner on my bbq instead of the electric element for heating? It is a propane burner.
