Build your own one-person submarine

Xlg One Man Sub 1
Here’s how to build your own one-person submarine, from Modern Mechanix 1933 – “Take Thrilling Underwater Cruise in ONE-MAN SUB. YOU get all the keen thrills of deep-sea diving and underwater cruising in this one-man submarine. Towed by a motor-boat, the novel craft will take you down to a depth of at least 30 feet, where you can explore the river or lake bed. Through a special conning tower you can watch the fish as you dart among them, the while maneuvering about like a real submarine.”Link.

Wouldn’t there be an issue with breathing?

that problem should be easily and permanently solved with a box of straws and a roll of duct tape.

I think thats supposed to be 1933, not 1993.

There were a lot more lawyers in 1993…

    oops, updated

Honestly, did anyone back then actually sit at home and build these?

Heheh, that might JUST work as well. I guess they were relying on the projects being too complicated for people to build and jeopardise their lives in. 30 feet is a long way to the top! If the sub sprung a leak you’d have to get up again pretty sharpish. If the sub “burst” under the water pressure you’d most likely damage your hearing, then you could rupture your lungs on the way up because you would naturally hold your breath but the air in your lungs would quaruple in volume as the pressure subsided…

I have a couple of photos of submarine used by drug smugglers abandened on the beach after use. Which had one diesel engine and two electric engines.
