Edmund Scientific has the gel filled ant farm on sale (today only it seems) for $16.95 – “With the AntWorks ant farm, you can watch ants create 3-D tunnels in the amazing space gel. This miraculous gel is based on a 2003 NASA Space Shuttle experiment to study animal life in space and test how ants successfully tunnel in microgravity. This space-age gel serves as both habitat and nutrition for the ants. Watch as the ants turn a brick of aqua-blue gel into a fascinating colony of tunnels!”Link.

I bought one of these from Thinkgeek a whileback. it didnt take much time for teh ants to fill the entire thing with tunnels unfortuntaly they didnt last longer. the instructions didnt say anything about feeding the ants, I assumed there was food in the gel, but all of my ants dies within a month

It would be a lot better if we could just buy one gallon of the gel. Anyone know where to get it?

I got one of these blue-gel ant farms in ’98. It came with a mail-in coupon for about ten ants that came in a tube. I think they were harvester ants. One morning I woke to find all of them dead. It seems I had an ant infestation in my dorm room. The little local ants could fit through the air holes in the farm. They must have been attracted to the sweet blue gel. What was left was the carnage of an epic ant battle. Most were either ripped in two or dunked head first into the gel. I wrote to the company just to let them know, but never heard back.

One other thing is the ants are not included they can be purchased sep via the website below or they can be ordered via the included order form.

My ants last generally 4-6 months as long as i weekly open the top to let new air in. The guys @ http://www.bio-spheres.com say their unit actually produces 02 as they have a “Secret formula” Not many people yet in the usa selling thier product as it looks like it is fairly new.
I found http://www.sciencetoystore.com and http://www.perpetualkid.com selling some of the items though.
