Dale (MAKE editor and publisher) sends in this report from the annual Punkin Chunkin eventIt’s the first weekend after Halloween and that means it’s time for the World Championship Punkin Chunkin to take place in a large empty cornfield in Millsboro, Delaware. Make Contributing Editor Bill Gurstelle and I are at Punkin Chunkin where Old Glory, Second Amendment, and Yankee Seige are among the more patriotic names of the entries in what seems like an arms race. You’d think the point of the contest is to find something cool to do with leftover pumpkins. However, these days Pumpkin-Chunkin challengers are growing their own specialized pumpkins, which are white, a bit harder and more like a gourd. It was a clear, cold day in Millsboro and it was hard to follow these medium-sized white pumpkins once they were shot into the air. They generally travelled 1,000 to 3,500 feet.

We also came across a cigar-toting man wearing a pumpkin as a hat and he proudly inserted his false teeth to show off his Punkin Chunkin gear. Punkin Chunkin is like a Nascar event but the action’s in the pits, not the racetrack.
