MAKE FLickr photo pool member farneawrites – “We’ve started experimenting with plexiglass and lights. Just scrape a drawing with a dimmer tip on one side of the plexiglass piece. Then make a little hole in the edge below, enough to insert a little light source as a led. Turning the light on, you will see a nice laser/neon effect on your drawing. You can see the result, it is still raw and not well refined, but it gives you an idea. Use high performance led and limit the power to it with a resistor, otherwise you’ll burn it.” [via] – Link.

My mom is an art teacher and did a lot of her master’s work in plex. She has recently been working with using gel medium on top of the plex as well and has had some success with it. Some of her work can be found here, but most of that is using gel medium on plex to cast shadows. Neat idea on actually inserting the LED. She generally just used a fluorescent at the top.

A few years back, I had occasion to try something similar using scratches on scraps of plastic from CD jewel cases, edge lit using LEDs as above and bundled together using Legos. There are a couple of pictures here (the last two, at the bottom of the page).
