The Button Scarf

Homemade Scarf - Daily Self Portrait - December 4, 2006

I’m a man and I knit.

I made this scarf last year and it just resurface in a closet search. I have this habit of knitting things and losing them within days and so this is a happy find. I once sheared a sheep, spun the wool, made a hat, washed it a million times (sheep smell), and then knit what I consider to be the coolest hat in the universe. Three days later it was gone…

I made the button scarf out of scandanavian sock wool that I got at the goodwill and I doubled up since it was so thin. I had planned for the scarf to be twice as long, but it’s not, and having spent some time on it, I made do.

It’s a ribbed knit one and purl one thing. The button is sewed on 2 1/2 inches from the end and I sewed the button hole with a sewing machine A LOT before cutting the hole. It would be smarter to just not knit there if you think of it. I don’t remember the size of the needles but I think I used 1/4″ dowels sharpened in a pencil sharpener with a blob of hot glue on the end.

You can make a regular long guy scarf, but this one is pretty much the only really cool scarf to be made for guys. It’s also about half as short, so you can make two in the same time it takes for one!
