Thames and Kosmos Microcontroller Kit

Mc 2006

I grew up on 50-in-1, 100-in-1, 150-in-1 and I think a 200-in-1 which were electronics kits that radio shack put out that let you mock up different circuits like an alarm for your room, a crystal radio, and others.

Here’s a similar kit, but for microcontrollers. I haven’t tried it out yet, but it looks good for starter microcontroller projects. If you’ve got played with it, drop a comment and let us know what you’ve made with it and what you think! – Link

There was some conversation about this in the forums:

The issue was mainly whether this would be at all usable with MacOS X, but a couple of people looked into it and gave more general opinion.

From looking at it online and reading what others wrote, I think the comparison to the old Radio Shack 200-in-1 sets is apt. It might be good for kids (or novices that want to ease into things) as an introduction to electronics, but less so as a platform for microcontroller projects beyond what comes in the manual.

I too grew up with one of those kits that my grandfather bought me for Christmas and in an effort to pass the torch, I recently bought my 8 year old nephew one of these kits for Christmas that I found here:

Hey guys, I’m a real newbie at this whole electronics thing, and I ordered this kit after seeing it mentioned here and doing a bit of research into it. It’s just what I need, and lets me learn the basics really nice and quickly. :) I’ll graduate from here to a Wiring board, I think, but this is certainly helpful!! I just started in on it tonight and have already learned quite a bit. :) I like it, and even though I haven’t done any electronics before, this is a good thing to start with! I think once I’m finished with it, I’ll send it to my nephew and get him interested. ;)
