Arduino category on MAKE

There are so many Arduino projects lately (and we are now stocking, well trying to keep stocking) the Arudino kits in the Maker store I’m giving them their own category here on MAKE…

What’s Arduino? Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments – Link.

I’m happy to see these types of projects covered by Make. However, I just started working on a Boe-Bot kit by Parallax in no small part because Bre Pettis and Joe Grand have used the Basic Stamp module in two or three Weekend Project episodes. I’m more of a hardware guy than a software guy, so learning to program on the Basic Stamp is still challenging. I had hoped that the Basic Stamp would be the microcontroller of choice for those just getting into these types of projects. Now I see what seems like several links every day about the Arduino, which I don’t think has been covered by any Weekend Project. I know there is room for more than one microcontroller in Make, but it seems like there are some mixed messages being sent. I don’t want to learn how to use the Basic Stamp only to find out that the Arduino gets all the love from the community.

I guess I’m asking two questions. Where is the coverage of Basic Stamp projects, and why is the Arduino getting so much attention lately?

    1. search the make site we have *tons* of projects, in fact there are more things to do with basic stamp than arduino and more people using it.
    2. as far as what’s going on: arduino is open source (hardware and software) and a lot of new people are getting in to it, so they’re doing projects and posting them – and sending them to us.

Thanks for the quick reply. I’m glad to learn I didn’t back the wrong horse!
