At first it looked like it wasn’t going to be possible to use the newer iPods with Linux, but 36 hours after the story made the rounds online there’s now some code to get things working… Link.

It’s not just Linux. It’s any 3rd party Sync utility. eg Ephpod, Sharepod, Winamp, etc etc. And we’re not out of the woods yet.

It’s not just Sync. The new iPods can’t use iPodLinux or Rockbox. And with encrypted firmware, may never be able to.

Apple is very unfriendly to Makers. The latest iPhone, iTouch, iPod, is exposing them for what they are.

Apple’s consumer electronics are unfriendly to makers. They distribute a nice SDK and IDE with their desktop OS.

The iPod has been successful in part because it’s stable. Random software that doesn’t go through Apple’s QA process could threaten that image. For most people, if they see an iPod become unstable, they’ll just say “Hey, the iPod crashed!” rather than “Hey, that v0.1 program I tried installing made the iPod crash!”

I neither like it nor necessarily agree with it, but Apple’s not just being malicious.
