Matt took apart his car stereo’s remote, hacked out the important buttons, and mounted them to his steering wheel. For once, a car audio hack that makes operating your stereo safer! This is a fairly straightforward hack with no programming required. – Link.

I’ve always wanted to do something like this. Any shots of the finished project? Where did he put the wires so it didn’t interfere with turning the wheel?
I would assume that the remote is mounted to the back of the steering wheel, so no wires to the radio.
I posted a picture of the ‘finished’ product here:

And yeah, its an infrared remote, so there aren’t any wires leading back to the stereo.
Nice. I’ve been thinking of modding the remote to my car stereo, but didn’t think of just added buttons in parallel. Much easier than re-designing the case.
I’ve been wanting to add some steering wheel buttons to control my carPC for some time now, but haven’t been able to figure out a way to fab up the buttons so they look nice on the wheel.
Although the button boards on your project don’t look very presentable, the idea of putting them on the BACK of the wheel is a nice one that I hadn’t thought of – if you screwed/glued them to the wheel rather than using zip ties, they could be all but invisible from the front.
Thanks for the inspiration!
