Aquaduct mobile filtration vehicle

Energy & Sustainability

This winner of the Innovate or Die competition filters water through pedal power:

A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a carbon filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary.

A carbon filter is insufficient against pathogens, in fact it can act as a breeding ground for coliform bacteria (E.Coli), which are prevailent in surface water.
Some sort of disinfection (UV, oxidation like chlorine, RO/nano/ultra filtration) is needed for the clean tank for the water to be potable.

    It’s a lot like this:

I like the UV filter method, but I also like the trike transport method. But I think that the clean water tank need to be larger and closer to the ground, there’s no reason for it to be in the front. Overall it’s pretty cool, but I think too much was done to make it look good.

On another note, why do they have the website so resource intensive?

Good luck with the pedal uphill

  4. Carl says:

    Why? Gravity works great.
