My father built an enlarger like this, probably in the 1940s. He used the floats from ball-cocks (i.e. the float valves used in toilet cisterns), which in those days were beautifully-made brass spheres. He also used iron pipes for the column, and all sorts of brass parts for the rest of it. He fixed it all together with solder and then built it into a wooden sideboard along with developing trays, a clock, tray heaters (carbon-filament light bulb) and a safelight. I wish I had a photo of it!
