DIY Augmented reality with cheap hardware…

Aug Tweaq sent in this great augmented reality project “You can use their free software and patterns, and view augmented reality using your webcam. It’s a lot more astonishing when you actually see it, and you can pan around the object using your webcam.” From the site “…inspired by ARToolkit, the popular system designed for Augmented Reality…“ARTag consists of a library of patterns, which when mounted on a flat surface by themself (or now in arrays) and viewed by a video camera or webcam, can be robustly identified. Pose can be found accurately and with low cost using a camera as the only special hardware. For Augmented Reality this means the viewpoint (pose) can be determined from the markers so a 3D object can be rendered so it looks like it belongs in the scene when you see it with a webcam or look at it with your HMD. A full SDK with camera and OpenGL support is available for you to develop your own AR applications!” Link.

    any idea where i can get CV.dll from, i keep getting missing dll errors, but i cant seem to find the right CV.dll

    If you’re interested, please check out http://www.artag.net ARTag Rev1 is just the marker detection for various platforms (Win, Linux, Mac), Rev2 includes kits to make your own apps, games, etc.

    The DLL’s should be in the demo or full download, please redownload as that some things have changed. If you can’t find them email me mark.fiala@nrc-cnrc.gc.ca and I’ll get them to you.

    ARTag is not based on ARToolkit at all (other than in spirit), the markers look similar but all else is different. ARTag uses a different method for identifying the borders that dosen’t need a threshold (using edge segments instead of thresholding/morphology) that is more robust to lighting variation, occlusion – plus robust digital communication algorithms are used so you never get false detections or confusion between markers.

    I played with this at SIGGRAPH 2004.

    Once you catch the AR bug, you begin to see uses for it everywhere.

    Thanks mark, downloading the demo’s off the main page via the banners didnt seem to work, but when i downloaded the full version, and copied the dlls into the dirs, it al worked fine

    dam, now i need to learn how to make my own
    i want to make one that doesnt display the web cams data, just the resultant image, heck, it could then display its own tags on the corners of the page. The reason? so that you can run it with a projector, aim it at a wall, strap a webcam to a helmet and have a all in one 3D design experience

    right, off to work :P
