MAKE & CRAFT on the iPhone

Texterity (the company that digitizes MAKE & CRAFT) have iPhone editions of both our magazines right now. Point your iPhone to http://iphone.texterity.com and you’ll be able browse MAKE 10 and CRAFT 04! It’s beta at the moment so there are some things getting fixed and I’m not sure how long we’ll have these available – but for now enjoy!

Good try, Texterity, but I must be honest – I think this interface is terrible. The graphics are great, and being able to browse MAKE magazine on my iPhone is wonderful, but opening links in new Safari tabs is a terrible idea, and pages take forever to load, and stall out Safari as it chokes on the huge graphic sizes.

The iPhone is a mobile device without a lot of CPU horsepower (though granted it has more than other devices). These pages have to be much much smaller to be viable on the iPhone.

So, if you have this shiny overpriced totally closed piece of hardware that’s a phone + other stuff (certainly not a PDA + phone), tied to the most horrible I-spy-on-you telecom giant (and I mean monopoly sized telecom giant) then you get the last issue of make for free, online, over the wireless of the internets.

Not that anything of the above is a bad thing. I’m a grown up entitle to my opinion, and I know I have the choice to avoid both the iPhone and ATT.

But why do I have to pay $15 for that antiquated paper format of Make magazine? Why are you giving it away for free?

And yes, I know I don’t really need an iphone for it, I just need the iPhone user agent to be faked…

@tms10000 – when you subscribe to MAKE you get the digital edition for free. you can view it on any browser and save PDFs, share it, print it, etc etc…

as far as this iphone *test* we may or may not keep it open for people, but the best way to test it is to get people to try it out.

    cheers,
    pt
