This detailed how-to walks you through the process of installing a mod-chip in your Nintendo Wii console so that you can pay games without region lock. You’ll need to tune up your soldering skills before getting started with this hack, but it might be worth it if you think the local Wii games are less interesting that the multitudes of titles available in other countries.

    I haven’t read the article, but from the posted picture it looks like they’re showing you how to install the WiiKey. Unfortunately, they’ve used jumper wires, while the WiiKey was designed specifically to not require jumper wires, i.e. you place it directly on the PCB. I’ve installed three of these modchips, and on the first two used jumper wires to bridge the gap left when you place the modchip on the motherboard, and left the third jumperless. I must say that jumperless was much quicker, easier, and less prone to error.

    Yes, I used the long wire method for this. There is a short wire method, but the short wire method makes troubleshooting and changing out the chip far more difficult that either has to be.

    So, I chose long wire. There’s lots more on these two methods if you Google around a little.

    There are many choices for a Wii Modchip. WiiKey is but one of them.

    Most people on this site would appreciate the open source one YAOSM. It uses a cheap chip (12F683) and the code is open for anybody to edit and use.
