Mechanical Atom-Smacker

Craft & Design

I ran across videos of Brad Litwin’s kinetic sculptures a while back, this is one of my favorites. It would have been fun to see him at Make:Philly last night – I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Brad gave a great talk all about his journey as a Maker. All the way from building things in his mind’s-eye as a kid, to building guitars (he broke out a folding guitar of his own design and played a little blues number for us), to his first forays into kinetic sculpture, to applying his skills to the “real” world to make a living, to showing us videos of some of his more recent work and pulling a few pieces out of boxes for us to see and play with up close (the Atom-Smacker was one of them and is my son’s favorite).

Then we all teamed up for some great fun building Brad-inspired marble-transporting contraptions as part of the Make:Philly Challenge and learned that Brad makes kinetic sculpture look easy as the challenge was agreed to be the most difficult so far. But it was still a blast!
