Rutger sent word that our friend Mark Hoekstra of Geektechniques has passed away… He writes

Mark Hoekstra of Geektechnique fame has passed away this morning. He suffered from a severe heart attack last wednesday while on his bike. He has been in the hospital in a coma since then. Friday night he was pronounced braindead. In the spirit of his open source thinking, Mark was kept alive for a donor procedure and passed away this morning (saturday).

He will be cremated this thursday in his hometown of Groningen. Mark had just turned 34 on september the 12th.

I’m emailing you because I know you were big mutual fans and you opened a big window to/from his world. I hope you can post a message for the numerous Mark Hoekstra fans that read Make Magazine/blog.

Make Pt0992
Mark was one of those makers who would email me his projects, they were very good and eventually he started his own DIY site and wrote a great article for MAKE print too (Bicycle iPod Charger). I know Mark would want to be remembered for his fun projects and boundless curiosity. Take a minute and check out his site, his projects and his photos.

The last email Mark sent to me was a few months ago about his latest project…

Hi Phillip, This weekend I connected some cheap LCD shutter glasses to one of my old SGIs. Now this is a project well known within the SGI hobbyist community (and ever since I read about it, I’ve been wanting to do this), maybe it inspires some people to grab a SGI cheap somewhere and tinker around with it.

Mark always had the maker spirit. Our thoughts are with Mark’s friends and family.

it felt like yesterday that I last met him, even though it was more than a year ago.

Mark was very energetic, friendly and took the time to talk to me and I love(d) reading his thoughts on BRIGHT and other places.

This, most certainly, comes as a shock. Mark, you and your inventive spirit will be missed.

  4. Philip says:

wow, I really don’t know what to say. He seemed like the type of guy that wouldn’t die this way, I always thought he would die in some server falling on him, never a heart attack. so sad to see him go, what will happen to Geek technique? My sincerest condolences to his Family and friend, and the entire hacking community. He will be missed by me at least, but I hope he will be missed by everyone too.

  5. sck says:

what a scary coincidence, I found his bike charger article for the first time by absolute chance just last night. that’s really a terrible and unexpected death

If you can’t open it, you don’t own it. Well, here a guy who put that phase to the ultimate use. I’d like to suggest that Make honor him by telling its readers how to donate their organs to help others live and make the world a better place.

It makes me really sad that a great Maker is gone from the world. His projects were great (the bike iPod charger, the Das iBook (filing the letters off of iBook keys), the iPod HD to CF card converter. I even commented on his site a few times. It’s funny how the internet can make people you’ve never met, that’s half way across the world, an acquaintance.

    My condolencesto the family

A sad sad thing. I enjoyed watching him on tv short ago and now I read about this on one of my favorite sites.
