The coloured dome took Spanish artist Miquel Barcelo more than a year to produce, using 100 tons of paint with pigments from all over the world… – Wow!

A cash strapped UN wasted 24 MILLION dollars for THAT! What about feeding the poor or stopping wars in Africa or perhaps stopping nuclear proliferation? Like American politicians, nothing is to good for the politico, the poor be damned. Looks like the roof of purgatory.

I hope there aren’t earthquakes there. I’d hate to be run through when those start falling off the ceiling!

  3. Paco says:

While I will admit that it looks cool, its also clearly ridiculous, especially since its the UN and 18 Million Euros. Are you F***ing serious? Who thought this was a good idea? Add yet another log on the fire of why people in “third-world” countries hate the UN. Good Job.

If you read the description, it took more than a year to make, meaning that the UN probably had a stable source of income at the time they signed the contract. Relatively speaking, $24 million is probably a small drop in the bucket.

Also, spending money in countries with starving children has always been a bit tricky — How do you guarantee that the food or aid won’t go to the instigators? What if there’s an embargo against the gov’t? Would distribution require peacekeepers on the ground? You can’t throw money at most problems. This was probably about as safe and uncontroversial a decision that the UN has made in a long time.
