Make: television “fact sheet”

Keith our copy chief sent around a Make: television fact sheet so I figured I’d post it up here too…

SHOW DESCRIPTION
Make: is the DIY series for a new generation! It celebrates “Makers” – the inventors, artists, geeks and just plain everyday folks who mix new and old technology to create new-fangled marvels. The series encourages everyone to invent, revent, recycle, upcycle, and act up. Based on the popular Make magazine, each half-hour episode inspires millions to think, create, and, well, make.

Make: premieres nationwide on Public Television stations and online at makezine.tv in January 2009.  It’s produced by Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) in St. Paul, Minn.  Full episodes will be available at makezine.tv as well as PDFs of all the DIY projects on the show. (Makers can submit their own videos for the Maker Channel segment of the show at makerchannel.org)

AIRDATES
Broadcast feed starts January 3, 2009, at 7 p.m. Eastern time. Television premiere is January 3 on some stations, but air dates differ (see list below). See your local public television station for air dates and times.

Web premiere is January 3 at 7 a.m. Eastern time at makezine.tv

PROGRAMS
Season 1 consists of 10 half-hour episodes; all will be available at makezine.tv and also on iTunes. MAKE author John Park hosts the Maker Workshop (DIY) segment, and MAKE author Bill Gurstelle is the technical consultant for the show. Preview video is available at makezine.tv.

Well crud. I pleaded with Columbus’ PBS station (WOSU) to pick it up but it looks like the didn’t according to your list. I’ll have to keep on them I guess.

  2. gnomic says:

With the economy going to hell in a handbag, is Geeksquad still on board with supporting this? I wonder if you could/should diversify your funding sources. I’d think that Discovery Channel (Mythbusters, etc), SciFi Channel, and a lot of makezine advertisers would be interested as well.

You might even consider putting a paypal donation link out there for self funding.

  3. Phillip Torrone says:

@gnomic – the funding for season one was generously supported by geek squad. all episodes will be out in 2009. the world will get a year of Make: television and that’s very exciting.

in the past we considered the discovery channel but i think public television / tpt was the best choice for us. we are able to reach the most people, we can publish the series online for full non-DRM download and in HD, commercial free. discovery and sci-fi have very different business models, i think the content we created is a great match for what public television can bring us.

as far as next season goes, we’d love to geeksquad sponsor it again as well as other cool companies that see the value in what the maker community brings. 2009 will be the year we can all help create the next generation of scientists and engineers, creative and smart companies will see MAKE as a great partner and i look forward to seeing what happens next.

if you want to support MAKE, pick up a subscription and a kit, but most of all make something and share it :)
