A little update, there is now a Make: television torrent. Make: television debuted online and on public television (broadcast / cable tv) January of 2009. The series encourages everyone to invent, revent, recycle, upcycle, and act up. Based on the popular Make magazine, each half-hour episode hopes to inspire viewers to think, create, and, well, make.

“Making” TV and web history, Make: television has debuted in all of the following places – Viewed or downloaded DRM-free, in HD on makezine.tv – available on Vimeo, YouTube, blip.tv and iTunes… and now on LegalTorrents. That’s right you can use any BitTorrenting p2p client to download the first episode of Make: televison. The more folks who download the show, the faster the downloads get.

We’re reporting on Make: television’s debut in our news segment on today’s episode of Attack of the Show which airs on the G4 cable TV network. Congratulations on the new show and best of luck, guys. I’ll post a video link here in the comments after the show.

    @attackoftheshow, thanks!!!!!

  5. rick says:

crap, i should have been more clear. my bad. what i think would be GREAT, would be a torrent rss feed, which i could point my torrent client at to automatically grab each new episode. assuming, of course, that future episodes will also be legally available via torrent :)

  6. Phillip Torrone says:

@rick, how about this – you make us a RSS feed that has all this and i’ll post it on MAKE, as we add more shows i’ll update it. all you need to do is make one and get the first one in and we’ll do it up.

Here’s that link I promised. The story is at 1:20. Cheers!

Why is the torrent an .mov file? Almost every other video I download is an .avi (Divx or Xvid) or .mkv files (h264). I don’t want to have to install quicktime just for Make TV.

Also, is an HD version available for download anywhere?

  9. Brian says:

It looks like the file is just incorrectly described as an .mov file on Legal Torrents. It really is an .mp4 file, so no quicktime player needed.

I still am curious if there is an HD version available anywhere.

  10. rick says:

@Phillip Torrone: i’ll see what i can do

  11. Phillip Torrone says:

@brian – yah, when it was uploaded to legal torrents it was a MP4, the site might change the extension. as part as other versions if you encode one for us we’ll try and get it out there, MP4 seemed to be the most universal way to get it out there. there is HD versions on vimeo and youtube, we are working on getting an additional HD version up too.

Thanks for making this available to us make magazine fans outside the US =)

Just watched the episode, looks great! I love the way you guys ordered the segments, has a really good flow to it. The show surprised me at how well produced it turned out and only my highest complements to the whole production crew.

I don’t know how difficult the licensing any everything else would be, but you guys might try and find out if you could submit the show to netflix watch instantly. I know PBS has a ton of shows already on there, so might not be that hard, plus it would help you reach a bigger audience.

Again it was a great kick off show and I only have one question, when does the next show air?

  14. Phillip Torrone says:

@zof, thank you so much for the kind words – i forwarded it to the tpt and MAKE gang, we really appreciate it.

as far as netflix goes, good idea – we’ll see what’s possible and if it is — you’ll know first!

  15. Brian says:

@Phillip, the file is an .mp4 once you actually download the torrent and look, it is only listed as a .mov file on the website’s torrent listing.

I’d also like to echo zof’s comments on the quality of the show. It’s superb. The show was well organized, entertaining, and filled with useful information.

Two more bittorrent suggestions. One, would it be possible to bt a release of the HD version in parallel with the SD version. Two, what about including any ancillary materials like the PDF of cat feeder instructions (http://cachefly.oreilly.com/make/television/VCR_CatFeeder_FINAL.pdf) to make it a one stop shop for the episode.

Thanks again for a great show! I missed Maker Faire Austin 2008 because I was in Asia on business (still am actually), but I nominally live in Austin, so I look forward to seeing you all for the 2009 edition.

When will the TV episodes make it to iTunes? As of 1/9, they’re not showing up. The regular podcasts are, however.

  17. Phillip Torrone says:

@Brian Lalor – they’re all there, you might need to click the refresh button in itunes, or if something weird is going on, remove the MAKE channel, and then re-add it… i can see the tv show on my mac and iphone when viewing the MAKE podcast channel.
