A couple weeks ago, I posted a guide to installing the latest version of Android (with the “Cupcake” features) on an Android Dev Phone 1. Joel Evans of Geek.com and I met up the other day and played around with the build. Joel’s written up the experience with video and pictures:
Included in the video is a demonstration of the on-screen keyboard, prettier transitions, some fun in the Linux shell, and more. We also have some photos (the video was a little blurry) of the skateboarding androids-which come up as you hack-and the obligatory Snake game on the Android OS.

Ranking of phones as mentioned by Make

3) Openmoko (never mentioned that I can see)
Ranking of phones that Make reader “should” like
1) Openmoko (completely open in hardware and software)
2) Android (mostly open software, closed hardware)
3) iPhone (completely closed)
I don’t get it.
@projectpotpourri, that’s a valid criticism. If you have some Openmoko stories, please suggest them at https://makezine.com/cs/user/create/link?x-t=suggest.form
I’ll also contact the Openmoko folks and see if I can get some hands-on time with one of their phones, so I can create some original posts about it.
Awesome, I look forward to seeing them here. Perhaps a story just introducing them would be good to start with.
(Also, it looks like I inadvertently spammed you with my blog URL in the title of the last post. Sorry about that.)
Thanks, @DU. We’ve had a couple of introductory stories (see http://is.gd/kulu ), but I’ve been in contact with the Openmoko folks, and we’ll be getting some hands-on time with the device for some more detailed stories.
Enjoy that tutorial + video demo :
