Can’t find MAKE in your local newsstand? Want more makers in your store? Help is on the way

Here’s a not from our Associate Publisher, Dan Woods…

Even though MAKE is now carried in thousands of bookstores, newsstands and specialty stores throughout North America, we often hear from some makers who can’t find us at their favorite local store.  Plus, as you may have read, newsstand distribution has recently become extremely contentious, convoluted, and confusing.  We want to see peace and harmony out there, but our ultimate concern is that our product – MAKE Magazine – continues to be available to our readers.  We thought it was time that we be clear with our readers as well as our loyal retailers about their options during this trying time.

For our readers
First, the very best and most affordable way to guarantee you’ll never miss another issue of MAKE is to subscribe at https://makezine.com/subscribe. Plus you’ll have access to MAKE Digital Edition, including the complete MAKE archives.

But yes, we also recognize there reasons why 10’s of thousands of people choose to buy MAKE on newsstand each issue.  If you are a newsstand customer and you’re finding MAKE okay, bravo.  We hope you continue to support your local merchants.  If you don’t find it at your local newsstand, please ask them to carry it, and then send us the name of the shop and the city and state at reseller@makershed.com

If you would like to reserve a single copy of the upcoming issue of MAKE Volume-17 and have us ship it to you as soon as it’s off press, simply visit http://makershed.com/preorder.  Place your order by March 9th and we’ll even pay for the postage.

For our retailers
If you presently carry MAKE, thank you!  If you’d like more makers coming through your door, we can help.  We reach millions of them every month, and soon we will be launching a “Where’s MAKE?” webpage on makezine.com that will feature newsstands and stores who carry MAKE so that our readers can more easily find you.  If you’d like to have your store included in this new directory, please let us know about your store (name, location, store hours, email contact, any make-related events, a link to photos, etc.).  Send your info to newsstand@oreilly.com.

We do hear from a lot of indie stores and smaller speciality retailers who want to carry MAKE but aren’t setup with an established newsstand distributor.  No sweat. We’ve set up a simple way to order MAKE (or any of our other products) direct from the source – Us!  And yes, you’ll get our standard wholesale discount.  Just drop us a note at reseller@makershed.com, tell us about your store and we’ll set you up with direct online ordering.

Our goal is to ensure that MAKE is available to the growing community of makers wherever they may live.  If you’re a retailer and would like to partner with us, we’d like to hear from you.  If you’re a maker and you have thoughts about how we can do better in this regard, please write to me personally and let me know your thoughts dan@oreilly.com

What about makezine being sold in other counries outside the US?
I live in the UK and regularly visit the website, but would love to read it off line as well (e.g. when on the train)

Excellent point, Simon. To be honest, it’s sometimes difficult getting the kind of retail presence that we (and our readers) would like to see in The UK and other countries outside of the US. But…we’re a determined lot. So we thought we’d enlist the global army of Makers to help the cause. If you have a favorite store that already carries MAKE (For example our friends at Foyles on Charing Cross Road in London), send us a note so we can give them some exposure. If you have a favorite store that you wish would carry MAKE, let us know about it. No guarantees, but we’ll see what we can do.

I once got some old Makes from Waterstone’s in Leeds and you can also get them cheap off Amazon Marketplace UK sometimes but they are never the new ones.
