I was excited when the Chronulator came out and am still a fan of the kit. But I’ve been somewhat disappointed with what people have done with it. I expected they’d be more hacks to the circuit and lots of seriously-cool cases. Like this one — a gorgeous construction, made of brass curtain parts, a tea box, and some other parts, by a French sculptor.

    Hi Gareth,

Thanks for the post. Emmanuel’s work is truly amazing, and I’m always excited and honored to see a Chronulator achieve such dizzying heights of craftsmanship. But the kit was also designed as a *very* easy kit to build for people just learning about soldering and electronics. For the vast majority of people I’ve talked with, it’s their first electronics kit. So while I will always thrill at seeing incredible Chronulator reinterpretations like Emmanuel’s, I hope people are not intimidated or deterred from getting a kit for its educational value and the simple pleasure of assembling it.

I wish I could do the sort of creative craftsmanship and mechanical work shown here. I basically built the electronics as stepping point when I was attaching analog meter movements to an arduino to build a retro display for my PC, but my finished product doesn’t look very impressive.

I hope folks didn’t think I was suggesting that the Chronulator kit is anything but wonderful (I love mine, wrote a glowing review when it came out, and suggested that a bunch of people get ’em as Christmas presents). And I think it’s fine that a lot of people (me!) didn’t bother to do anything fancy with their build. I was just saying that when it came out, since it SO begged for a case, I expected more folks would come up with creative cases and share them. Maybe they have and they just aren’t posting them. If you DO have a Chronulator case, regardless of how modest, please send us the link. We’d love to see it. One of these days, I’ll get around to doing something with mine.
