Tech reporter Etan Horowitz wrote a nice piece in today’s Orlando Sentinel about makers in his area of the country. Ken Delahoussaye, a MAKE contributor, is profiled. Here’s a snippet:

Some of his other projects include a motion detector that plays a sound or video on his computer; a remote-control robot with a camera inside; and a tennis-ball launcher made with electric-scooter motors, a battery used for jump-starting a car and other parts.

“The biggest motivation for me is actually the building of the project,” Delahoussaye said.

“Once it’s built and it works, there is a satisfaction in that, but the awe is gone.”

Etan also has some extra material, videos, and offers some interesting thoughts about pulling the article together on his blog. MAKE magazine is, of course (yay!), mentioned, and there are links to some of Ken’s articles and other pertinent Make: Online pages.

I’m not living in the Orlando area anymore but whenever I’m back, I always find time for a trip to Winter Park Skycraft. I wish my town had something like this. Junk/surplus/electronics heaven.

I’m also an ex-orlando-ite. Skycraft is an amazing place. I hear Orlando has maker-type workshops now, and I think someone opened a free-geek there too. I wish some of this stuff would travel down to south florida!

All Hail Skyjunk…oOps..Skycraft. TRULY an amazing place. When I lived in O-town, then Kissimmee, this was the mecca for anything electronic, obscure or interesting:). Thanks always to Ron Accardi for steering me there.

Being in Melbourne now, I have a distant second, still best in town to my knowledge: Astro Too. Nope, not a substitute for skycraft, but the next best LOCAL thing. Leave your attitude and best clothes at home. If you are in a hurry, you will pay for it. Hang out, be respectful and patient, and deals will flow your way.

I noted in issue of MAKEmag16, page 167- Ken lives in Melbourne!!! ( USB motion detector) GLAD I was such a …Ummm..PITA to get this issue to start my re-subscription.

Well worth getting it if you missed it…

Great info, and what sounds like a fantastic burgeoning maker community in Florida (or at least parts of the state). I shouldn’t be surprised, tho, since Kip Kay hails from the Sunshine State, too. Thanks for the comments!

    1. Volkemon says:

Whoa… KipKay is a floridian too?!? Still here?

      I Smell MAKErfaire southeast…. PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASE

Melbourne is central, cheap and ready…..With beaches!

      :)

      1. Shawn Connally says:

Yep, Kip is still a Floridian, and he’s all for a Maker Faire Southeast as well! Although he might have some compelling arguments for hosting it in Orlando. Or maybe not-so-compelling, I’m not sure. Branching out with Maker Faires in many areas would be great, and we’re all hoping to make this happen someday!
