The Alchemy of Color Knitting: The Art and Technique of Mastering Exquisite Palettes by Gina Wilde
Do you ever step into a yarn shop and just “ooh” and “ahh” over all the colors but have a hard time deciding which colors to use for your knitting projects? Now you can learn more about color theory and knitting with help from this new book, The Alchemy of Color Knitting by Gina Wilde. The first section of the book starts off with the question, “What is Color?” Here, you’ll learn all about color theory, with a color wheel made of yarn! Wilde goes over primary, secondary, and tertiary colors as well as the relationship between colors. Get a better understanding how to group colors together to create warm or cool palettes, as well as split or double compliments. (You can preview some of these pages below in the book preview module.) In addition to all the great lessons on color, the book has 25 knitting patterns where each project is prefaced with a related color study. Some of my favorite projects in the book are the Clematis Scarf (pictured on the cover), Cutaway Cardigan, and the Shibori Messenger Bag (both pictured below). The Alchemy of Knitting is a great resource to help you jump start color creativity in your knitting.

I would enjoy this book because #1 I have just learned to knit multi-colour, and havn’t lost the excitement for it!… #2 I am playing the poor college student card! Oh yes, and #3, it would aid me with something to do/stare at while on a study break, during late night study sessions! Thanks bunches.

  6. Leslie J says:

Looks like an interesting book… I just learned to knit at Christmas and already it’s taken over my life. I’m always looking to improve technique, find new patterns and ideas :)

  7. Kristen says:

I literally JUST got the hang of knitting last night, so I need some knitting books! Thank you.

  8. Chelsea S says:

I would love to have this book because I just started knitting and learned by watching youtube videos, this would give me some great ideas for new projects to work on!

OMG!! The preview pages are so awesome. Just looking at them make me want to skip work, go the yarn store, and start knitting.

  13. sweetannierose says:

I want this book because it’s GORGEOUS. I am sure the color theory would have an effect on all of my craft projects and plans. And I definitely want the pattern for the scarf on the cover!

  14. Prawn says:

I have been trying to teach myself how to use different colours in my knitting for a few years now and I can never quite get it right… it seems like this book has some great in-depth techniques that could really help me make a breakthrough in my knitting!

  15. Laura says:

I would love a copy of this book. I’m a knitter, crocheter and spinner. I’ve just learned how to dye yarn and this book would be so helpful with that. I’d love to be able to confidently combine colours. This book looks like it would teach me how to pick colours for projects and not just stick to the same safe combinations I usually use.
Also I must make the shawl on page 8, it’s beautiful. I’ve been obsessed with teal blue and green recently and that shawl combines them perfectly.

  16. B e c k y says:

I’ve definitely been slacking on my knitting lately, but I think learning about colorwork would get me going again! It looks fabulous and I’m so in love with the Clematis Scarf, it’s so delicate and beautiful!

  18. speckel says:

I would love a copy of this book because I’m forever buying different colors of the same yarn as I’m drawn to the combination, but not knowing what to do with it after I have it.

  19. Ollie says:

I have been knitting for several years now and color has been one of my biggest struggles. I have been very frustrated time and time again picking out colors that in my mind look fabulous together and then ends up being a disaster. I guess it shouldn’t come as a shock since I can barely match my clothes! I really hope I win this book!

  20. Morgan B says:

I’m a junior Fibers/Fabric Design major in college right now who loves to knit/dye/spin/crochet and who usually ends up choosing to buy groceries instead of craft books. This book looks great! I love using bright bold colors.

  25. Cali E. says:

What an amazing book! This would be a perfect addition to any knitter’s – or any color enthusiast, for that matter – collection. I’d love to get my hands on a copy of this lovely eye-candy; not only for me, but for my roommate as well. We’re both avid crafters and artists, and I’m certain this book would be wonderful inspiration to us both. :)

  26. denise says:

I would love to win this book.

  27. Donna says:

Lately I haven’t had a lot of extra money to spend on yarn. That isn’t as dire as it could be, because I have a mighty stash. But it’s really difficult for me to match stash yarns together, so I keep either only using one type of yarn or going with safe, boring choices that don’t satisfy my color craving. This book could really liven up my attempts to plan projects using stash yarns!

  28. elis says:

What a great idea! I’d get tons of use out of this — most of my yarn stash is small amounts left over from other peoples’ projects, it would be really great to know how to coordinate all them into something beautiful!

  29. Mandy says:

I would love this book because I have recently been learning to knit and crochet and this would help me out a lot in my knitting adventures!

  30. sarchix says:

Wow, what a great book. This might tempt my daughter to giving knitting a try!

  31. JeCaThRe says:

My sister is the knitter in the family. This would be a great present for her birthday next month.

  32. Margaret says:

OOOoh this looks AMAZING!! I have huge bins of yarn stash because I buy because I love the color then get home and start things and it looks horrendous. I would love to win this book and possibly make something that didn’t look terrible together! :)

  33. chewy_95 says:

I would love this book. It looks very awsome and I want to make more awsome gifts for people for christmas this year.
    Thanks

  34. Carole says:

OMG, that’s exactly the book I need. I’ve been taught how to knit at 10 and I’m 42. I’m a decent lace knitter, I love socks, I can go through never ending afghans but the only thing I suck at is combining colors…
    Thanks for the giveaway ;)

  35. Tala says:

Besides the fact that it looks absolutely beautiful, and that (looking at your post and the preview) I see multiple projects which interest me, I’ve always had trouble branching out and being adventurous with my color choices- typically if I try something outside of the two or three set combinations I know I like, it turns out looking like it belongs in clown school. In other words, this is an area I definently need some guidance in.

  36. marianne says:

I’m always trying to learn more about color, knitting, and colors in knitting and would love this book.

  37. szirkel says:

Color has always been a mystery to me. Although I can intuitively combine colors with fairly good results, it would be helpful (and more importantly reassuring) to have some knowledge of color theory to back up those selections. Not only would this information inform my knitting but also the mosaic artwork I design and create. Actually, it would improve so many aspects of my life from selecting clothes to planning a flower garden to decorating my home and so on! Thanks for your consideration.

  38. muskeg harpy says:

I bought a box of amazing homespun yarn from a dear friend two years ago. This colorful box of yarn in languishing and in need of some inspiring designs. I think this book would do the trick. la_libellule@yahoo.com

  39. Sareah says:

I need this book. I have never managed to buy yarns without first calling a friend or family member from the store to ask their opinion!

  40. Katie says:

This book has all the makings of a wonderful weekend of knitting and relaxing. The colors will be a wonderful addition to the cold weather when winter comes around in Wisconsin.

  41. gactor says:

Don’t have many references to help us make color decisions in knitting. This book would be quite useful to me, as I have many bits of color in my stash that need to be used creatively and effectively. Plus I just love those flowers!

  42. Wynterose says:

trying to sign in using open i.d. has turned this into a fiasco as Yahoo doesn’t recognize your site.
Thank you for hosting this contest as the book looks very interesting. Here is my entry.

  43. Gretel Shuvzwichinstov says:

This book looks like it’s great! I would love to win it.

  44. Mary says:

I keep seeing things about this book and I would love to see it in person. Looks great!

  45. Alex says:

The most challenging aspect of knitting (for me) is choosing the right colors, textures, etc. I’m a textile student, and I’m hoping to get more in depth with these as i progress in my studies. I also started a knitting/crocheting club on my college campus. This would be a great book to reference for my classes and show to my knitting club!

  46. Aprilly says:

I need this book more fore my roommate than myself. Our common areas are entirely in black and white with a tiny bit of color snuck in from me. I’ve just taught her to knit this year so this book can expand her horizons.

  47. Eva says:

Oh this book looks amazing! I try to learn something new with every knitting project. Being almost finished with a tricky pattern in a neutral colour I would love to explore something completely different – a project in exciting colour combinations!

  48. Jen says:

Oh, yum… I’m a little bit drooling down the front of meself…what a lovely-looking book.
I’m a homeschooling mama of five who is always looking for ways to inspire her offspring. My two older daughters are learning to knit, and I’d love to show them the photos in this book to spur them on past the rote kind of knitting they are currently doing in order to master stitches… to show them that there is a rainbow at the end of the tunnel!!
Thanks for making us aware of this :) I’m always up for some beauty.
    mar3ks@comcast.net

  49. Anjuli A says:

I need this book! That is totally me in the yarn shop staring at the wall of yarn, physically unable to pick a color! I think it would be also useful for me to know more about color theory for when I paint or make paper crafts or screen prints or sewing projects or web design… basically everywhere! And color makes me happy!

  50. Fanny says:

I need this book to give my knitting some color inspiration. Thanks for hosting this book giveaway! =)

  51. betsy Mamo says:

Whoever said less is more was delusional….I’d like to know how to make colors sing, how to make them run down the racetrack or swing on the monkeybars.

  52. Heidi Butcher says:

I am always looking for inspiration in my knitting as well as ways to effectively use up my stash! This book looks great!

  53. Hannah in Kansas says:

I would love to make my Knitting Clubs members jealous.

  54. Terri D. says:

I need this book because I am desperately color challenged.

  55. 1tsp_grace says:

I just can’t figure out the colors. The colors I have look great together, but there are value issues (I think. . . ) that are keeping the pattern from working as I’d like. I need help!

  56. Ellen Kissman says:

    Who wouldn’t want this book?!
I would like to stop making ugly knits.
Puce and day glow orange are good together right?? :)

  57. MelodyJ says:

I need to learn how to be more creative with color combos. I saw this book at B&N. It looks great. I want it.

  58. hairball says:

I’m really drawn to the colors in the samples from this book–esp. the cutaway cardigan. Plus, the color combining would help when I’m spinning my own yarns!

  59. ibex67 says:

    (1) I’m broke
    (2) I’m depressed
    (3) knitting and other creative ventures are keeping me sane
    (4) i haven’t a natural sense of color combos — it’s one of the weakest links in my creative chain.
    (5) it would make me really happy to win something.
    (6) it would make me even happier to have a burst of inspiration to attack my yarn stash in a new way. i think this book would do that…

  60. Adrienne says:

working with color is one of my favorite parts of knitting. I would love to learn more!

  61. Sylvia says:

I would love to have this book because I just finished cleaning out my room and organized my knitting area with lots of yarn I found that I forgot I even had. If I had this book, I’d have motivation to do something with all that yarn. Also, who doesn’t like to get free stuff?

  62. kat says:

Those colors are gorgeous! I think the first thing that attracted me to a ball of yarn is color… I hope it talks about self-striping yarn and color pooling.

  63. Sarah says:

Ah, I have a huge stash of beautiful yarns, and an even bigger one of uncoiled yarns that I thought for some reason would look awesome together. Help me Craft!!

  64. Nadia says:

Because I love colours and should wear them more often. However, I shy away from knitting with many colours because I am never sure if they will look good in the end. The book would be a great help.

  65. Arika Owsianski says:

I would love to win this book for so many reasons but the top reason being. It would be the perfect escape when reading it on my breaks from my office job in the hot heat. It would allow me to have a true break. Where I could dream of all the things I could do as I pass through the pages of the book

  66. Rachel says:

I love, love, love wearing color and I’m always looking for a way to use color creatively in my knitting. The projects in the pictures are wonderful! I can already tell I won’t be able to put this book down.

  67. gisele says:

I have so been looking for a book like this! I’ve been searching for information on color theory and how to combine colors effectively. Sounds geeky, I know!

  68. Monica says:

I would love to have more color inspiration- I have tons of yarn in colors I drooled over in various yarn shops but lack the skill in color matching to put them together to create the beautiful and subtle shading shown in the photos from the book. Most color books are too general for use with knitting since they tend to work with saturated colors or don’t mix the finished products the way different colors of yarn tend to when mixed together in the same item. I love what I’ve seen of this book so far!!!

  69. Jean says:

I put this book on my wishlist a long time ago because I am a sucker for individual skeins of wonderful color, but I freeze when it comes to putting things together. I would love to create the blue/green shawl (page 8 of the preview above)!

  70. jen says:

i always buy colours, and always make black things. need to break free!!!!!!!!

  71. Mary says:

Gosh this is definitely what I need a dose of. My 4 yr old has better colour sense than me.

  72. Natalie says:

Wow, I need this, and so do all who witness my knitting. I have no color sense or matching skills at all. (Everything goes with jeans, right?) And I live with a colorblind boyfriend who insists our cats are green.
Desperately needing color sanity in my life.
    Thanks!!!

  73. Ginamarie says:

I love color! This book looks amazing. :)

  74. nic says:

Yes please, I could do with a little alchemy right now!

  75. enidb says:

I have tried to learn the color wheel to understand how to mix colors. People have explained the color wheel. But I still don’t fully understand it. This book is the perfect way to really get beyond blending colors. The color wheel, but also just nuances of color. It will be a great book for any knitter’s library.

  76. Hannah Mittelstaedt says:

I’m an engineering student who loves to craft and recently learned to knit. I’ve been looking for projects that inspire me to take the time from studying, and see them through to the end. I’m also trying to develop my eye for color. This book looks like great inspiration and a lot of fun!

  77. Caroline M. says:

What a great idea for a book! I’d love it because my grandmother recently moved, giving me much of her yarn stash. I’m now left with a bunch of different colors and types of yarn, with very few sets large enough for a whole project. Time to combine colors!
Thanks for the giveaways, as ever. :]

  78. Nancy Mc says:

Why would I want a copy of this book? Why not! The cover alone is beautiful. I can only imagine the wonders inside. Please include me in your drawing. Thank you.

  79. Janel says:

I love playing with color! There’s nothing like finding out that colors you thought would look horrible actually look fabulous together.

  80. Rachel says:

I’d love a copy of this book! It looks beautiful, and I’m always looking for new inspiration.

  81. karenth says:

I pledged this year to knit more colorwork…it’s great fun. Please: I need this book! You can’t have too much knowledge or too much inspiration or too much beautiful.

  82. Knit_snark says:

I learned to knit as a coping technique for various medical problems and am now completely addicted. I live in a rural area, and the nearest yarn shop is over 70 miles away. Since I can’t drive, I rarely make it to the yarn shop. This book would give me great new inspiration and make the rare trips to the yarn shops that much more worthwhile and exciting.

  83. kate dotson says:

I would love this book because I need a lesson in color theory! I always play it safe with my color choices (I have a lot of brown and tan) and I would like to branch out.

  84. Susan says:

(This sounds like a college app, but here goes!)
This book might be the solution to my infatuation with green. It’s not that I don’t like any other colors, I’m stuck in a rut as to what colors I’d wear and someday make use of. I do love me some Alpaca/Silk green sweaters and accessories, but my wardrobe needs help! (Also, my lover would probably appreciate it if I stopped trying to dress him in shades of loden, as well).

  85. june at noon (gretchen) says:

I would love to win this book because:
    a) I always enter giveaways and never win. Boo!
    b) I just recently read about doing granny squares using color theory, and it suddenly made me want to do a granny square afghan, yet I know nothing about color theory.
    c) I know nothing about color theory.
    Whee!

  86. mommaviv says:

I am a big chicken when it comes to color! I never combine colors well so I tend to let patterns do it for me. The problem comes when I see a colorful project… I love the style but not the colors the designer has used… That’s when I wimp out. This book is just what I need!

  87. cindicles says:

I would love to win this book! I have a motley stash of renegade yarns and I have no idea how to make them play nice together. I love color but I don’t know how to manage it. When I dare to use color my projects look like summer camp projects and never turn out like I had envisioned. I need help!

  88. Beth Grim says:

I dye my own fiber and work with textiles, as well as teach about them. This lovely book on color theory would be a useful addition to my library of inspirational books!

  89. Shoveling Ferret says:

I would love a copy because I look books, I love yarn, I love knitting and crocheting, and it looks absolutely beautiful.

  90. chrissy says:

I am an avid knitter and would adore having this book to cherish. Everything about knitting relaxes me, especially looking at finished works. This book seems so very inspiring!

  91. lucimama.livejournal.com says:

I’m color-challenged in yarn stores. Seems like any colors I put together in the store look really awful when I get them out into the light of day.
I think this book would really help me a lot.

  92. Danna Russel says:

I think the book has some very interesting ideas and I absolutely love the shawl in various tones of blue shown in the preview. I’d love to add it to my collection of knitting books.

  97. Poobert says:

I’ve been studying color theory at school and I’d love to put it into practice in my favorite pastime, knitting. This book looks like it would provide some great inspiration to achieving that end.

  98. amelia says:

All I ever want to look at are bright colors and patterns. I want to have this book because it would help me create things that I will love forever.

  99. Kirsten says:

I would love to receive a copy of this book since not only am I often challenged when it comes to picking and combining colours in an attractive way, but I am also very influenced by the colours chosen to display the finished product in a pattern. More often than not, I make a piece in the same colour as that being modelled in the pattern photo, and if the piece in the photo is not done up in a colour I would normally choose, I normally overlook the pattern completely! I know I’m missing out from this recurring lapse in creativity!
In any case, the book looks beautiful!

  100. Anna says:

I could really need this book. I love vibrant colours and have always been called “Miss Christmas Tree” by my mother and sister as they think I always overdo it just a bit too much. I’d like to learn how to be on the safe – and colourful – side in my clothes…

  101. KimberlyA says:

I am fascinated with color theory and would love to delve into how it works and be able to apply it to my fiber arts. Most color books have been unappealing to me despite my interest in color. This one however looks wonderful.
    Thank you for the giveaway!

  102. Jody Hayes says:

I would love to win this book. I’ve never seen anything like it and it looks so inviting. I knit a lot … for all sorts of ages but I have started knitting for myself too and want to make sure I don’t end up looking like a NANA rather than modern and hip!!!

  103. knitcraftart.wordpress.com says:

I would love this book because I´m too predictable – I go crazy over just a few colors but then everything I knit ends up in the same palette. I need to learn how to branch out!

  104. tawney says:

and it could teach me to use use color in my knitting – lots of color is better than one!

  105. Fleur says:

Usually I knit only in one and the same colour. I just like to wear dark colours especially, in nice patterns. But seeing the beautiful pictures in this book… I realize I might have to change my mind ;-)

  106. Isabel says:

It could be perfect for my mum :), she is a great crafter!

  113. KnittinKitten says:

This book looks fantastic! Most simply hand you patterns with little on theory, but Wilde’s book seems promising in giving a better understanding of color which the knitter can apply to projects beyond the book! Awesome :)

  114. Blackjam says:

I don’t just want this book I need it. I want to take my knitting and crochet to the next level I think this book could help. So help a girl out and let me win :-)
    Jennifer aka Blackjam

    Linda

I think this book would be helpful with piecing my odd-ball stash and my gift stash (random 1-2 ball gifts from non-crafters) together into nice things.

I certainly couldn’t do it without help, and I think this book will do just the trick! Thanks for posting this suggestion!

  122. Debbie says:

I saw it advertised yesterday in the new Vogue Knitting and now today with Craftzine. It is definitely a must for the knitting library and I would love to win!

  123. Amy says:

Love this. It would be great for me to learn how to knit in other colors besides blue and green (my two favorites). Help a girl get out of her nature color rut and into some brights.
PS – I’ve been knitting for 15 years.

  124. patita says:

I’d be so excited to get this book. I’ve got a lot of yarn stashed in different colors of the same type or related colors in different textures. This would give me a way to use it well! I get bored of ordinary patterns so quickly.

  125. Janackeh says:

i would LOVE to get this book!!! I am pretty new to knitting but i love different color yarn and funky designs!!

  126. conniereed56 says:

It would be great to win this book!

  127. kir says:

I’d faithfully read it each night before sleep.
So I can move to New Zealand,
    and breed coloured sheep.

  128. Marie says:

I would love to win this book, because I am planning on knitting some gift items for Christmas this year. I am not that great at figuring out color schemes yet, and this could really help me create some great gifts for my family.

  129. Jennifer says:

This book looks beautiful! As a beginner knitter, sometimes I play it safe and I’d like to become for creative with my knitting.

  130. Lillian Sun says:

I have a huge stash of yarns that I buy because I love the color — and trneds make it sometimes hard to find a color when you want it, so when I see one I hoarde it. I wish I can be inspired to make something with what I have! As pretty as it is in balls, I’d love to have pretty projects

I have such a hard time deciding what colors look best together. I would really love to see what advice Gina Wilde has for knitters who love color, but sometimes find the myriad of choices daunting!

  132. Laura A. says:

That book looks delicious! Real eye candy. Why do I need it? Because I’m a colour wimp. I just don’t have the confidence to put colours together. Instead I stick to monochromes or neutrals. Please help me!

  133. SJ says:

I love that it’s written by an artist, who shows her craftsmanship through her writing, and through wonderful photos. I look forward to a book that I can use as a reference manual, as well as a source of inspiration. And what a pleasant surprise: when I was searching for more info on this book (now that it’s published), I get introduced to this interesting website…can’t wait to check out craftzine, and what it’s all about…!

  134. Valerie says:

Wow, this looks fantastic! I’d love to have this book because I’m fascinated by gorgeous color combinations, and I’m just starting to get rolling with knitting. It’d be great to do it right from the start!

  135. ikisti says:

I’m a bit obsessed with collecting knitting books. I’m going to have to add this one now too.

  136. Betty Clay says:

I find myself using the same color combinations over and over. This book would help open doors to new uses for color and a creative approach to using my yarn stash.

  137. Marce Hall says:

As a beginning knitter this will give me a lot of information and be a fantastic read besides. It would be so great to win.

  138. qrious says:

Although I understand color theory on an intellectual level, I have a difficult time applying that understanding to fiber projects. This book could help me overcome that hurdle. Plus the projects look great!

  139. vacskamati says:

Is it a closed giveaway? If it isn’t, I’d be happy to win this wonderful book. And why? … I love colours and I love the creative and inspiring ideas, like these ones..
    Thanks for the chance! :D

  140. CarolK3 says:

I love color and The Alchemy of Color describes it best. The yummyness of Gina’s book conveys and elicits emotional responses to color that we all love. The ooohs and aaahs we all want from our hard work. Even her photographs with swirls of yarn convey the idea of creating motion with color – making me feel the dance of color. Understanding and studying color is vital to the success of our projects. Gina’s book will get us there through her knowledge and inspirational images and projects. I would love and cherish her book.

  141. Catherine says:

I’ve always wondered about colour science or knowledge, trying to understand it more in depth, which is why I’d love this book. Beside my knitting, I can also use this for my other creative projects, painting especially. Knowledge is power, right? Power to make more exciting things happen. I think it is important to explore the many options of colour and not be afraid of colours, the world is made with colours after all.

  142. Nan says:

I always have trouble mixing colors and this book is just what I need. Love the projects too. Super looking book.

  143. Lotta Vigur says:

The summer is just raining away here in Sweden and I would SO love to spice it up with colorful knitting! I’m always in awe of the books you recommend on this site, but most of them are very hard to find in Sweden – and this seemed like just the perfect book for me and my last days of rainy vacation…

  144. moytzey says:

My mum just recently showed me the joys of knitting and ever since I had a chance to see the picture from this book I want to make almost everything thet’s in it! It’s an obsession!

  145. SylvChezPlum says:

Wow, this book looks really nice and I can’t wait to see more of those designs. Thanks for the review.. and the giveaway, I’d love a copy both for the patterns inside which look beautiful, and because I’ve always been a total color lover… but it’d be nice to learn some of the theory ! :-)
