Hipster Logic has released an iPhone electronics reference app, called, well… Electrical Ref. From their iTunes description:

Have you ever wondered how many Ohms that resistor your holding is? Maybe wondered what the capacitance is of a ceramic disc capacitor with the code 103? Forgotten how to assemble a 555 timer circuit? Or wondered how to make your Arduino detect an EMF? Then Electrical Ref is the app for you. It features a resistor calculator, capacitor calculator, & circuit diagrams.

The app costs a buck.

I’d be REALLY impressed if it used the camera to identify resistors and overlay their values in live view.

I thought about hacking together an app that does just that, but my 2nd Gen iPhone’s camera just can’t handle taking a photo close enough for it to work. Heck, it can rarely make QR codes work, and they’re just black & white.

I know the 3gs can take better macro photos, but I’m not sure if it’s yet good enough for this application.

It can’t be serious, a buck for an app that can be easily replaced by some easy thinking.

    I use these apps:

    iResist
    ResistorCode
    LED Resist

I got myself Electronics Toolkit and iTronixpal. The first one is free, and the latter cost a buck, but very nice looking.
