Our final main event for MAKEcation 2009 is our “Family Challenge,” as in the Hatfields vs. the McCoys, the Lancasters vs. the Yorks, the Macs vs. the PCs. Build a backyard trebuchet! The family that builds our favorite, and sends us the documentation, will get a $100 gift certificate from the Maker Shed. Five runners up will get a Maker’s Notebook and their choice of The Best of MAKE or The Best of Instructables.

In a future episode, there will be some siege engine footage in “Lock and Load” (History Channel). No idea what footage will actually make it onto the screen, but they got footage of “Yankee Siege” throwing a piano (on fire no less), and got footage of us firing various melons with our Hatra Ballista.

That treb looks terrible! At 14, I built a 12 footer over two weeks. It can be disassembled, has a 120 lb counterweight, and launches shot put farther than you can throw a baseball. When will people start building real ballistic devices?

Sadly, this was the final performance for Martin’s trebuchet. After no takers were found, it ended up in the very dumpster it was targetting.
yeah. launched a 10 pound pumpkin 87 feet. the nearest competitor was 17 feet. we used weights from the gym room, they had a telephone pole segment and a lawnmower engine as a counterbalance. tragically, they drilled the hole for the shaft a foot off, so they lost tons of momentum.
