Become pencils after you pass away…

Carbon-Copies-Box
Nadine Jarvis’s “Carbon copies”… A little morbid, but a clever idea –

Pencils made from the carbon of human cremains. 240 pencils can be made from an average body of ash – a lifetime supply of pencils for those left behind. Each pencil is foil stamped with the name of the person. Only one pencil can be removed at a time, it is then sharpened back into the box causing the sharpenings to occupy the space of the used pencils. Over time the pencil box fills with sharpenings – a new ash, transforming it into an urn. The window acts as a timeline, showing you the amount of pencils left as time goes by.

The idea or writing with a pencil made from a dead relative (or stranger) is just disturbing. Since the deceased are already recycled by natural processes this doesn’t even have the justification of being “green”

Sounds like a great Weekend Project!

Now to find some dead relatives…

    1. Alexis says:

What do you mean with ‘find some dead relatives’? You can go make your own out of live ones.

Ugh, I hate pencils. Please make me into a pen.

This is just crazy. Why not coat hangers carved in their bones, and lampshades made of human skin while you’re at it? Sound great heh? No it doesn’t.

I’m fine with becoming a box of pencils as long as my loved ones promise to write something good with me… poetry, a novel, a witty celebrity profile for Vanity Fair would be nice.

But if they insist on using my carbon to scribble shopping lists or keep track of Gin Rummy scores…? Well, then I will haunt them from the grave for eternity.

    1. felix says:

what grave? you’re stuck in a box for ever…even after the pencisl are sharpened you are still stuck in there…lol i think its funny as hell…

  6. joe says:

this is funny….i want to be a box of pencils when i die, why not your useless when your in the ground. i can still be worth something dead. It may be morbid but what the heck, i find humor in this

I like it. I still prefer the company that will turn the Carbon in your ashes into diamonds after you kick off, but anything like this is just cool in my book.

I talked with with one of the guys when they first tried making diamonds from human cremains. The first ones were all colored diamonds, usually blue IIRC, from the trace amounts of other stuff in the ashes like Boron.
I hear now the process will actually get you about any color of diamond, but depending on the individual cremains they still all come out different shades for different people.

One question though; What would the pawn shop give you for a carat of Grandma anyway?

I think this is brilliant, especially if “your” box of pencils is given to or carried on by a family member who is an artist or writer. Imagine having a surviving relative use one of “your” pencils to sketch a drawing or write a novel. Your essence could be carried on through art and the written word. Pretty cool, at least I think its pretty neat. Although, I have to agree with Nate … if your using “my” pencils for daily shopping lists and Rummy scores, then leave “my” pencil in the box.

  10. Jon says:

At least by becoming a pencil, you can still provide something useful to your relatives to remember you by.

Nice paradox: Once dead I become a pencil and an artist uses that pencil to draw a sketch of me. Now that drawing is and isn’t me at the same time.
Magritte taken to the next level I’d say.
