Book Giveaway: Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts

Ms Encyclopedia Sewingfabric Banner

Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts is a must-have for a sewing lover’s craft library. This comprehensive book covers all you need to know for hand or machine sewing, including techniques such as appliqué, embroidery, quilting, dyeing, and printing. The book is filled with over 150 sewing projects (including a few no-sew ones too) pulled from the Martha archives. For me, having all these beautiful projects in one book just makes me so happy! It’s inspiration each time I turn the page. (I’ve already placed a bookmark for the drawstring pants pattern — hello PJ’s!) A lot of the projects also give you the chance to recycle by using up your fabric scraps, old clothing (great used menswear projects), and old sweaters. The book also comes with a CD which includes printable clothing patterns and templates. Mother’s Day is a little over a month away, but I already know that my mom would be thrilled to get this book.

To have this book as a first source of information on how to do a certain craft or technique would be wonderful. Sometimes the sheer amount of information and “how tos” posted on-line overwhelms me. If I had this book I would have a starting place right in front of me. I could actually do the project/craft instead of spending time trying to find or determine which “how-tos” work for me.

  170. sheed-o Hooshmand says:

After receiving Joan Gorman’s “Stitch Village”, it’s been none stop “OH what can i do with this random pile of paper/fabric/recycled stuff/everything”
It’s like a gate-way drug, And Martha Stewart is the pusher. Bad analogy? I’m sure there are crafters out there who would agree. What I’m trying to say is… thank you Craftzine, i’m addicted, and i want more!!

  171. Beesknees says:

  177. Kathi Kraftyzales says:

I would love this book for summer with my granddaughters. They come for a month of sewing, crafting, swimming lessons, tea parties, and library visits. This would be a great source of inspiration for their sewing projects.

  183. peanutbudder says:

In the last 3 years, sewing has changed my life. It has given me focus, direction, and new goals in my life I never thought I would have. Coming from a life of bad decisions and terrible mistakes, sewing has become a haven of self worth and personal achievements I never thought a woman like me would ever get the chance to have. I have SEW much to learn yet, though. Being unable to afford schooling leaves me with no option but to teach myself. My new husband’s factory closed last May, and he is still unemployed, so a sewing book is unfortunately, not on the list of things we can afford right now.
I love Martha and I love this website! I have learned a TONNE from both of you already. Thanks sew much for being awesome!

  184. Dorion says:

  191. Katie says:

Oh! I need this book- I have a sewing machine but I’m clueless and Martha can help!

  192. Elisha says:

My beloved grandma just died on March 12th. She was the lady who taught me how to knit, sew clothing, quilt… and we did numerous other crafts together including making Christmas ornaments and other holiday decorations. She’s the only grandmother I had, and who I went to for help on my confusing projects. In fact, she’s the one the entire town went to for help with projects– she owned a knit shop in the 70s and 80s, and worked at a local sewing shop in the 80s and 90s, before becoming THE WalMart fabric section lady for our local WalMart.
Anyway, she LOVED Martha Stewart; she recorded her shows on VCR and later Tivo, subscribed to Living. Since I no longer have my precious gramma to help me with my crafts, I’d love Martha’s book… maybe then I can begin to use up the miles of fabric and pounds of yarn I recently inherited.

  193. cinderellen says:

Oh how I love beautiful craft books. So inspiring.

  194. Natalie Zee Drieu says:

Entering the giveaway for Kira Sinclair

  195. MoCraft says:

    Dear CRAFT staff,
My name is Morgan and I am doing a year of service through Americorps Vista at a non-profit arts organization. I graduated with a fiber arts degree last Spring and have been working with youth ever since. My dream is to open a community-based arts organization to low-income and at-risk youth in an effort to empower them through the creation of crafts and practical goods.
I have always admired Martha’s ability to clearly explain projects and would like to use this book as a tool to create lesson plans and projects for the kids. Instead of keeping the book for my personal copy I would like to keep it out as a resource. I grew up in a low-income household and spent my childhood creating crafts and teaching others how they could too. Please consider giving a copy to me so I can make some of Martha’s beautiful creations and expand that knowledge to others.
Good luck to everyone else entering and have a great day Craft Community!
    Thank you, Morgan

Thanks much for the consideration! Juniper

  202. comma_police says:

I have been working on teaching myself to sew, and it’s been slow going. This book would be a great resource.

  203. mamarog says:

Although I would love to win this book…(I have never really won any contests), I see that there are many deserving people who have posted comments as to why they would like to win. (I would not like to have to make that choice.)
Anyway, I am an empty nester who has been sewing and crafting for years. I am self employed and my business emphasis has always been to promote woman artisans/crafters in there entrepreneurial endeavors.
My grandmother bought me my first sewing machine when I was 12 and she taught me all the sewing basics. She was actually a college graduate from Pratt back in the days when women barely made it through high school. She was definitely a pioneer in her time.
I think about her often and how (in maybe a small way) she has helped woman with there ambitions while also being a role model to me. My grandmother was born in 1890.

  204. shawdraw says:

My collection is sadly dated. Martha’s book would be both useful AND eye-candy. A perfect combination!

  207. jarmel says:

basically i sign on to the internet to look at the craftzine blog and submit essays to martha stewart, trying to get tickets to her show for me and my grandma.
since my grandama is in love with martha, i promise to share this book with her…if im lucky enough to get it.
i guess since im always jealous of her countless amounts of martha stewart magazines that i would feel real awesome bringing something this cool to our weekly craft table.
    !!!!!!!iiiiiii!!!!!!!

  208. MaryB says:

I used to sew in high school – several, several moons ago! – and actually made the dress I wore to graduation. Unfortunately I haven’t done much of anything since then, but I just got a new sewing machine for Christmas so this year I’m determined to rediscover my inner Martha!

  227. Lindsay says:

For the last 7 years I have been focusing on going to school and haven’t allowed myself to work on anything else, especially crafty things. Finally, I am graduating this May with my masters degree! I don’t know what I’m going to do with my extra time! I bet Martha has some ideas. :) What a great way to kick off my first summer of NO SCHOOL!!!!

  228. stblaize says:

We are starting a Sew-Op Co-op in my town. The co-op will be have tools and a library and volunteers to help people with projects. My mother, who is 70 and recently retired, said she wants to volunteer with me. While she hasn’t worked with fabric that much recently, she qualified as a Master Embroiderer in the late 1970s. She told me she wants to make new friends and have creative interactions, especially with younger people or sewing new-comers.
I am looking forward to helping out with my mom.
The Sew-Op needs books for its library. This would be a great addition.

I LOVE Martha, and these project are oh-so-cute. I’ve just started sewing with my mother’s hand-me-down old sewing machine. I think this book would provide some inspirational projects to make use of my “new” machine.

  239. rosebanana says:

    In two words: Menswear Bunnies.
To elaborate: I am an avid crafter, always on the look out for source material and inspiration. I beseech you to please help me find a way to reduce my embarrassingly large mountain of fabric scraps and ribbon remainders. I know that Martha would approve of my wish for clutter reduction through the creation of an army of menswear bunnies.

  240. mindy says:

This book looks amazing! I’m crafty and would love to have some new inspiration.

  241. Susanna says:

  244. mikki says:

hello there! i would love and appreciate this book. i am a low income crafty mama and i try to sew as many things in my daily life as possible to stretch the dollars. i don’t always have the extra income to purchase wonderful sewing books so i often have to improvise and make up my own patterns sometimes with disastrous results. the photos from this book look absolutely divine and i promise to sew them all. in fact! if i win the book i will start a blog and i will personally make every pattern in the book and document my attempts! thank you so much for giving us all this opportunity!

  245. libbyko says:

Martha books are fantastic! I swear by them. Plus, this book would be a great summer projects starter.

I would like a nice sewing reference book, I don’t have one in my collection.

  248. IrishMcc says:

Everyone seems to have a wonderful reason to get this book, and I’m not sure if I can top it…but let see…
I’m recently unemployed, let go from a horrible office job, but I’m going back to school, and @ 35 that is a challenge. With a BA in Studio Arts I’ve had a lovely aray of office jobs, having this book is inspiration…I need inspiration to get my butt in gear. I’ve never given up on my love of crafts…and would love this book.
But I wouldn’t looovvvve this book, not in a weird way. :-P
Good luck to everyone! Keeping making & crafting.

  249. maxabelle says:

It looks like I may have to bring my machine out of the attic for this one!

  250. schizicb says:

Books and sewing, yay! I bought a sewing machine a year ago and all I’ve used it for was sewing paper. Something doesn’t seem right here. I need some new projects to make.

  251. Sassy Priscilla says:

I sure would love this book. Thank you for the opportunity.

  252. shrielenee says:

I would really adore this book. I’m a beginning sewer but have been crafting my little heart out for several years. I’m about to become the editor of a home website and this would be GREATLY helpful in improving my skills! Love Martha!

  253. kellirdan says:

O my goodness there are so many people who want this book. And wow – I want it just as badly! :)
I think that this book would resolve my biggest crafting problem – lots of unfinished projects! Martha would give it to me step by step so that I wouldn’t be making it up as I go and end up at a loss!
I’d love the book! Thank you for the opportunity and I hope that it goes to a very deserving individual (if not me)!

  254. Sarah says:

Wow, that looks fantastic! Martha always has such inspiring books. I’d love to add it to my collection.

  260. bunnygirl42 says:

I’ve not been well for a long time and I’m finally starting to get my crafting mojo back, and something like this would really help!

  261. craftymommy says:

it never hurts to have books from craft gurus in your private library. Having the ability to look up help in a “how to” book can mean the difference between creating a piece of junk or a piece of art!

  262. chris says:

Would I like to win Martha’s latest encyclopedia ? The answer is Yes !!!! Martha and her talented team of designers and crafts people do an amazing job of enabling the every day crafts person to create beautiful finished products . I would be honored to receive her latest book . Thanks for the opportunity .

  263. carrauntoohil says:

I would love to have this book because it’s soooo handy to have a hardcopy reference. I use the internet a lot, but without a computer in my sewing room, I need to print out everything. Besides, Martha’s projects are great!

  264. christyanthemum says:

I would LOVE this book! But, I NEED this book because I recently moved cross-country to start over in California (from Upstate NY). I had to leave behind my entire stash of craft supplies and books, which is a tragic fate, indeed. I’ve just started gathering up new scraps and papers and fabrics and ideas…and what I need most is an excellent reference book, an all-in-one how-to companion! Please pick me! ;)

  265. Erica says:

Oh my goodness, I would just LOVE to have this book.
I’m currently an undergrad student studying for a semester in glorious Mérida, Mexico. And, while it IS glorious, I am feeling myself getting rather anxious to return home, for all my hobby supplies! As I’ve been abroad, I’ve grown increasingly aware of what I value in life and what I am passionate about. A couple of those things, I’ve learned, are my joy for learning new skills (and sharing them) and my passion for making all sorts of things by hand.
To be honest, I haven’t sewn since middle school Home Ec class, and I could use a lot of help. I’ve been collecting patterns and project ideas for the past few months, waiting until I get back home to tackle them. And visiting so many artisans markets here–with the Mayan women with their wares spread on blankets on the ground, working on embroidering huipiles–just makes me all the more wistful. With the help of this book–and my mom’s fuzzy knowledge on sewing–I will have even more projects to work on and great how-tos to show me the ropes. My sisters have always said that I must aspire to be the next Martha Stewart, so, needless to say, this poor college student would love, love, love to be chosen for this book. :)

  266. galexandrias says:

I would love this book! Simply, I have a sewing machine that’s been sitting around getting dusty for the past five years…maybe used it a total of 10 times. I’ve recently become inspired to start using some of the fabric I’ve collected over the years and learn to sew more than just a hem! This book would be a great dose of inspiration for me to get my crafting butt into gear. And that duvet cover looks divine, I’m tired of the same ol’ plain jane, overpriced ones in the store. I’m ready to get creative! :oD

  267. wendylou says:

I would LOVE this book! Martha’s always got great projects and advice. Pick me! I’m swell.

  268. sumimac says:

It looks great. I would love to have this book.

  269. sumimac says:

I’d love to have this book.

  270. Natalie Zee Drieu says:

    Entering for Kristen Materne.

  271. lilymarie88 says:

Martha Stewart is a wonderful guru! I am so inspired by her, and I would be very grateful to have this book.
I’ve always been extremely passionate about making things since I was a little girl. My grandmother recently gave me her old SINGER (my 1st sewing machine) and I’m excited to get started on new creative projects. I enjoy all sorts of crafts, especially if it involves upcycling found materials. Crafting has become much more than a hobby for me. It is therapeutic and helps me relax. I feel happy when I’m crafting for the people I love. I dream of making a living off of my crafts one day. And, lastly, I treasure the handmade process, and the simple bliss of expressing myself. That is why I would love to learn and use the valuable techniques that Martha has to offer in her craft encyclopedia.

  272. David says:

I would so love to have this book! I’m always amazed by Martha!

  273. moreena tiede says:

I’ve promised my older daughter that we’ll learn to sew together this summer. Machine is bought, and the girls has drawn up design plans already. I’m quaking in my boots, but I’m pretty sure Martha won’t steer us wrong.

  274. Heather Jane says:

I exercised great restraint in walking out of the fabric store without this book over the weekend. I really, really, really wanted to bring it home.

  275. sarakate says:

This would be the perfect companion to my copy of Martha’s “Encyclopedia of Crafts”! Plus, I always love the idea of adding another book to my shelf.

  276. Melisa Taylor says:

I would love to win! I am kind of a terrible sewer and I’m hoping this book will help me with that. I have only successfully sewn ugly catnip toys and ugly doggie bandanas! Help!
I have been known to forget to stuff a toy before sewing it all up, then I have to rip it, stuff it and say it had “surgery” or call it “franken-mouse”. The animals still love their stuff, even if it is ugly to me!
    Thanks!
    Melisa
    :)

  277. Melisa Taylor says:

    let’s try this again.
I would LOVE to win this book, as all I have been successful at making is ugly dog toys, cat toys and bad doggie bandanas for my great dane. I have learned alot from Martha’s baking books, so I am sure she can teach me to sew better! I’m betting she remembers to stuff hers before sewing them together! LOL I have had to rip them and stuff them, then re-sew them can call the toy “franken-mouse” because of the stitches. They look terrible!
I keep buying fabrics I love in hopes to actually learn this stuff!

  278. Marisa Peters says:

This would be wonderful to have for making Christmas presents! Yes, I am starting early, but that is because I need all of the time I can get. It’s interesting that there are patterns I can print out from the disc.
I hope everyone has a great day!

  279. amanda says:

I would love this because I try to sew but I have no idea what I am doing.

  280. Indiepindie says:

I would love to win this book!
I have not been sewing for years, but about half a year ago I started doing some needlework again, and I am loving it. I am doing it in between my classes at school. This book would be a perfect addition, since I have almost no books on the topic yet (just using things I have known from childhood).

  281. terra says:

I would love to own this book for those late nights of no sleep! Thanks for the awesome give away.
