Taking a picture of a circuit board just got a little easier. Using aftermarket automotive LED headlight rings and a spare lens hood, maker Udi Tirosh has fashioned a DIY macro lighting LED ring. [Thanks, Udi!]

LEDs are known for having a very poor color rendition index (at best you’ll see around 70, and that’s usually for luxeons, for these cheap little SMD’s, it will be a lot worse). If you care at all about image quality, they’re a horrible way to light a scene for photographic purposes.

Keep in mind they don’t generate “white” light, but some mess of a few wavelengths that sort of look white to human eyes.

And why in the world would you use a ring light if you don’t care that much about image quality?
