Che Guevara in dice

Silicon Valley software engineer Ari Krupnik makes what he calls “pixel mosaics” as a hobby. Besides dice, he’s also used bullet casings and M&Ms. You may have seen Ari in this full-page ShopBot ad in MAKE 14. His rendering of Che Guevara, above, uses 400 black dice. He’s also done one of George Orwell. (“Maybe one day my prose can be as fluid as his,” says Ari–hear, hear!) This page includes another dice example and some good detail on Ari’s process.

Does he do portraits of anyone other than socialists?

  2. Bob A. says:

Che is great! I look forward to his renderings of Castro, Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot. Collect ’em all!

    1. http://david.rysdam.org/blog/ says:

Seriously, Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot?

      1. irright says:

        Only a few hundred. Piker!

  3. Sean Michael Ragan says:

Personally, I find his process considerably more interesting than his choice of subject.

  4. Math Campbell says:

yep, the process is pretty nifty indeed. I’d imagine if you really went to town, you could probably even colour the dots and have a colour version, if you wanted.

Shame about the portrait, but then it *is* an iconic picture, love it or hate it.

Why is Make so facinated by Che?
We all know how much of a fooking douche bag this guy was so why does Make keep puting his images up in their blog?

Of all the things this Ari guy did why choose that one?
Hell the Uma one ( http://www.lib.aero/~ari/mosaics/thurman.jpg ) is better and done more recently.
    WTF Make?

    1. Sean Michael Ragan says:

…the Uma one is not made of dice, but of candy. This post is part of an ongoing series of dice mosaic posts, beginning with “Letterpress prints using dice as type” that are laid out nicely in the “More” section in the above post. Ari contacted me specifically about his dice mosaics in response to this line of posts. Of the three dice mosaics presented on his site, I chose Che because I think the image quality is the best of the three, and because the Orwell portrait has been featured on the Make blog before. It had absolutely nothing to do with Che’s status as a political figure, which to me seems entirely incidental and beside the “look it’s a picture made out of dice” point. In point of fact, the first title I chose for the post was “Real-world dice mosaics,” but judged that to be too boring. I won’t be baited into arguing about Che, Hitler, Pol Pot, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, or Elmer Fudd and whether they were good guys or bad guys. The point here is the process, folks.

        1. Sean Michael Ragan says:

I have removed the text of your comment because I have judged it to be deliberately inflammatory. For others, the effect of the comment was to imply that because I considered a dice portrait of Che Guevara to be acceptable content for Make: Online, that I would also therefore judge a Lego diorama depicting the scene of an infamous terrorist bombing to be acceptable content. I do not believe that comparison is valid or justified. I think it is simply an attempt to incite an argument.
