Ever dream of taking off for the equator, fixing up an old boat, and then sailing it off into the sunset? Well, a few years ago, a group lead by Moxie Marlinspike did just that. Under the banner of the Anarchist Yacht Club, they migrated to Florida, found and restored a boat that they named the Pestilence, then proceeded to sail it around the Bahamas. It’s the ultimate adventure, and luckily they captured their experience in the documentary Hold Fast. You can download a copy from their site, or stream it from Vimeo.

It’s nice to see some of that DIY spirit alive in the anarchist community.

I am fascinated. Have you guys ever heard of Outward Bound? Last month, I took a sailing course with OB and they taught us how to sail a 30 foot pulling boat. We sailed the Florida keys for 5 days, it was the best 5 days of my life. There were 9 of us, and we didn’t have a cabin. We slept on our oars, so I’m pretttyyy jealous of your boat. Direct depositing was the shit, miss it everyday. You guys rule!

    Gloucester was mispronounced.

you guys are SOOOO hard core! Sailing everywhere! And i really respect how you eschew society and fascist capitalist organization! Hey… Wait… 1:08:13… is that an EPIRB mounted on the bulkhead? So if you actually start sinking or get into actual trouble over your head you can call upon that very same fascist society of chauvist pigs to come get you in helicopters, right? Why not prove your hard core nature and give the epirb to some yachtie instead? BTW: there’s plenty of young, competent boat hippies all around the world. And most of them are less sanctimonious or ignorant than you. Just say’n. Love the video. Way to get out there. When you get more experience, i hope you learn to get a decent anchor setup–far more useful than your epirb (you could trade your EPIRB for a Bruce anchor and some chain!) anywhere outside of US territorial waters, and i hope you drop the sanctimonious crap. Just come out an play boats with us! Have a good winter… see you in the BVI
