The guys responsible for starting this in the first place were one of Midland Bank’s computer wizzes in the late 1960s and his son, who went on to design the Centronics printer plug. Mum had a machine where you had to set each pin by hand, using a comb, and came home one day to find it was in bits, being mated with a Meccano framework – a real Make job. The sale of the idea to Brother took about an hour!
