All the primary source material here appears to be in Japanese, in which I am sadly illiterate, but word on the street is that this is a college-level student engineering project. It’s called Skeletonics, and I want to describe the technology as a “passive exoskeleton,” because it does not have any servomechanisms and just amplifies the speed and reach of the wearer’s natural movements. That would be opposed to an “active exoskeleton,” which, you know, would be one that actually adds power to a movement. I dunno what good it may be, but it sure looks like fun. If nothing else, you could build one and sell rides in it at the county fair. [via Hack a Day]

    This is actually a great build! These Japanese boys are really great in terms of robotics and mechanical design. just a little bit more of development and this will be a great invention.

    In some ways, reminds me of the Springwalker, which recovers the energy of your downward stride to power a faster gait, or something like that. In any case, this exo really looks clever and fun. I want one!

        No problem. I am disappointed that the SpringWalker never really made it off the ground, so to speak. Their website has been pretty static for years. I first saw it on Scientific American Frontiers, and thought that it would be a great invention, but there’s been no more activity. Maybe someone can work up a Skeletonics/SpringWalker mashup for greater running speed.

    The video appears to show a kind of pressurized water-rocket launcher in the arm. I’d guess it might be a soda bottle and a CO2 cylinder. The launch didn’t work well, because the arm cover didn’t open correctly, I am guessing.

    I mean, what’s a mecha without a rocket launcher?

  7. clearly this exoskeleton is lacking several razorblade samurai swords at each arm as well as body armor for the user.

    Why aren’t we all trying to get plans drawn up to make the basics here? I don’t care if it has the faux armor, or even fingers, but I NEED one of these with at least arms and legs. Someone, anyone, lets get some plans and start making weaker versions of this thing. I really dont want to be seen on my patio without it on.
