The Great Global Hackerspace Challenge Selects 10 30 Spaces to Compete
Mitch Altman couldn’t decide between the thirty hackerspaces that entered, so rather than narrow the list down to ten, he convinced element14 to let them all in!

We’ve selected thirty Hackerspaces from around the world to participate in a competition to design and build an electronics project. The top three finalist will bring their creations to to Maker Faire in Silicon Valley this May to be judged by a panel of community leaders including Mitch Altman and Ben Heckendorn.

Alpha One Labs, Jigsaw Rennaissance, Maui Makers, FAMiLab, i3 Detroit, Splat Space, Sector67, OMNICORPDETROIT, HacDC, Workshop88, QC Co-Lab, Makerspace Urbana, Xin Che Jian, Noisebridge, Artisan’s Asylum, and Chicago’s PS:One are among the 30 hackerspaces who have joined the challenge.

Completing the challenge gets each entrant some soldering equipment, and the three semifinalists also get more awesome electronics equipmemnt.

Richard Feynman Lectures and Algorithms For Fun at Hacker Dojo
These two Hacker Dojo (Mountain View, CA) classes sound fascinating, and they’re both tonight at 7pm, TONIGHT.

We’ll discuss different kinds of algorithms. First, we’ll try to understand basic algorithms. We’ll also discuss simple puzzles and brain teasers. If you are not from mathematical background, you’ll find it simple and if you are from computer science, you’ll find it interesting. You can also post any algorithms you want to discuss in particular.

Recently made available via Microsoft (Project Tuva), these are the Messenger Lectures given by Feynman at Cornell in 1964 and later on collected in the book, “The Character of Physical Law”. We will be watching the fifth lecture in this series, with a discussion to follow.

Pachube International Internet of Things Hackathon – April 8, 2011

Calling all developers, designers, makers, mixers, mashers, tinkerers, philosopher-mechanics and sales engineers! Join us in helping to define and build the Internet of Things on Global Internet of Things Day! Use Pachube if you want, or build on other APIs – make something physical, or virtual; hardware or software; conceptual or practical – the point is for us to spend 24 hours connecting up our things to the web, our environments to our things, and our things to US! Starts on April 8, 2011 at 2pm UK time (which is 10pm in Tokyo, 11pm in Sydney, 6am in San Francisco) and goes on for 24 hours until 2pm (UK time) on April 9, 2011.

Knitting for Absolute Beginners at Toronto’s Site 3

This two-hour class, perfect for people who have never knit a stitch as well as those who have tried to learn before but since forgot, will provide an introduction to knitting vocabulary and material selection and teach basic techniques for casting on (starting a project), garter stitch (knitting), and binding off (finishing the project). By the end of two hours, all participants should have finished or at least made a good start on one of the simplest and most useful of knitted objects: a handy cotton washcloth.

Studio Bricolage is Looking at a Space
Minneapolis hackerspace-like organization Studio Briocolage and their kid-focused older brother Leonardo’s Basement are looking to lease a 40,000(!) sq. ft. space and want your input. It sounds like they’re looking at more of a Tech Shop model than a classic user-driven hackerspace model. Nevertheless, be sure to check them out and fill out the survey if you’d like to be involved.
