We’re all in awe over here at these incredible textile renditions of great works of art. From The Scream to Hokusai’s Wave, Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring to Warhol’s Marilyn images, the forty crafters and artists of a British group calling themselves The Materialistics have created an impressive gallery of textile work. They have fifty pieces on display at The Customs House art centre.

Group leader Sue McBride, 55, a textile artist from Washington, Tyne and Wear, spent six months producing a cross-stitch embroidered rendition of Jan Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring. She said: ‘Some pieces took months while others took just a few weeks. Most of them were a team effort depending on what type of skills were needed. Some we did alone because it’s the only way it worked – for one person to be doing it.’
